Guess what happened to me at the gas station? It wouldn't open up. I finally got a credit card under the lip of the door and as I pressed the unlock button on the FOB the gas door opened. The motor mechanism was growling at me, and still does when I press the unlock, or lock button on the FOB. Obviously it is in failure mode. I just put the little bolt and nut in the hole to keep it unlocked full time. Probably too expensive to replace the motor for it. Will just keep the bolt and nut in place. I was always a little concerned about that happening.
You can buy packages of bumper hole plugs in various sizes, and upholstery fasteners at auto parts stores. Anything with a round head that fits snugly in that hole will work. It was something I just had lying around.
I just went out to my miscellaneous nut and bolt box and found a little bolt that would fit somewhat close to the hole size and a nut to match. Made sure it would not rub or anything like that to where I would have to force it and the gas door opened and closed freely. I didn't have any scrivets around and quite frankly what I had handy worked out better than a scrivet.
The main thing is get get something to plug it and won't come loose.
Have a look at my post. Post number 1. Look at the picture. See how I put the little bolt and nut in the gas flap. Just go ahead and do that. Or, if you have a scrivet of some sort and size you can use that. Just make sure you glue it in a little bit if you use a scrivet if it isn't tight.
Here is what a scrivet looks like (hardware store). See Foosh's post number 9. He used a scrivet as opposed to my bolt and nut.

I agree with Foosh, one of the first things I did to the car. Invaluable when you need gas and the door won’t open. Simple, cheap and highly recommended.
