It's correct you cannot download software, but you can replace the module. If you do that, you have a factory NAV for a fraction of the cost of ordering NAV from the factory. The module replacement is a plug & play. When you buy it, most likely the co. you buy from is the one who made the module for GM, but I'm not 100% sure of that. The module is located above the driver side kick panel.
Not very difficult, even though this guy makes a chimpanzee look talented. The nav part of the system works well, but Nancy the voice recognition Navigation Nazzi is brain dead and ABSOLUTELY USELESS...

I used to think that the voice recognition system didn't understand me but I have come to realize the system is looking for specific keywords at certain points.
For example, if I select POI and say "Sleep Train Arena" the system doesn't recognize that. If I first say "Sports and Entertainment" then it recognizes that and lists the nearest POIs in that category. The problem with that that is tells you to complete the action using the screen. I then have to scroll through several screens to find out it maxes out at 100 items so if your POI isn't within the 100 closest POIs it won't be listed. However, if I say "Sports Complexes" (instead of "Sports and Entertainment" - which is a subcategory of "Sports and Entertainment") then it screens out other things and I have "Sleep Train Arena" listed early on.
Another example (although not related to voice). I was trying to enter Interstate 205 as a waypoint however it did not recognize it (I also tried Hwy 205). When I was on 205 I noticed that it showed it as "I-205". When I got home I tried searching for "I-205" and, sure enough, it found it.
My main gripe is these rules aren't documented anywhere so you are doing this by trial and error. This gets frustrating and distracting trying to do this while driving. I understand that the system isn't as capable as Google but if they have syntax/keyword/rule requirements they should be documented and published. I contacted their Infotainment Specialists and was told they don't have any other documentation other than the Infotainment Manual.
I have a 2014 3LT with factory nav and recently swapped out the HMI module and the radio module so I can get the newer nav and apple car play. I bought it from the Infotainment.com website and they do offer a 5% discount if you mention being a forum member. The install is not that bad and I did it myself. Getting to the HMI module is not too difficult but the radio module is a challenge. Now, I have it all just like the newer models.
