First, make sure the cables you're using are data cables. A data cable should present a file browser when plugged into a computer. Charge only cables won't do that.
It's been my observation that AA will not connect unless your phone connects to Bluetooth first. Make sure your phone is connected via Bluetooth before trying to get AA to project to the screen.
If you haven't tried before (in no particular order):
Reboot your phone
Reinstall Android Auto
Delete your phone's Bluetooth connection from the car and redo it. I've seen times when this appears to fix things.
Restart your car after turning it off open the driver's door so the OS on the car thinks you've left. You may need to wait a few moments before trying again.
This one bit me recently - my phone has a case. Sometimes I put a credit card between the phone and the case so I don't lose it. However, the card causes the case to bulge and therefore offset the hole in the case for the USB cable to connect. Not getting a solid connection on the USB cable causes me to get that message often. Sometimes it works but most times it doesn't. Remove the card and voila! AA starts working again.
This is why I absolutely hate tech! I’m a millennial too but I don’t think I’ve ever thought of using the damn app in my zl1 or C7Z. Hope you figure it out op
I am with you man. My car had an electrical heart attack on track and my phone/wallet spent 3 days behind the drop down entertainment screen. =( I also blew my master cylinder (clutch on floor) and when the tech finally got power to it, it started and flung itself into a tool box. An old school hand brake would have probably prevented this. F technology.

So, you hate tech because you can't think or imagine using it??? Got it.
For the record, this has nothing to do with being a so-called millennial and everything to do with being inquisitive...
Spent a while banging on this again tonight. I uncovered a clue. It works fine when I plug in my girlfriends phone. I guess that means the problem is with my phone, and not my car.
I tried everything I can think of. Different cords, turning off phone, deleting and reconnecting the blue tooth. turning off wi-fi, deleting and reinstalling the app...
I am a little worried it is a hardware situation. The charge port in my phone has seen a lot of use.

I have had this problem before with an older phone...not specific to AA, but the charge/data port just quite working. I surmised it was from repeated use. Since then I have started using magnetic cables and have been much happier since.

negative sir I just feel it is totally unnecessary for a sports car. I obviously know how to use it and apple car play but it is all a damn gimmick imho. Thanks for replying too and tossing in your pointless .02 now run

Do you know what's unnecessary for a sports car?
Leather interior
Radio/Infotainment
Air conditioner
Heater
Adjustable seats
Passenger seat
Rear hatch
Power windows
Paint
Badges
Sun visors
Airbags
I could go on, however, I think you see the point. For a true sports car, you don't really need any of that to race the car. And yet I'm betting you have all of those. Why would a nice handy computerized app and navigation system to find your way around?
I have a 2014 C 7 and a Android cellphone and to play songs I use Google Play Music !!! I attached my phone to my computer and downloaded all my albums to the cellphone !!! Once on the phone you have to touch the recent box to see your albums listed !!!!

If you go buy the USB cable I provided above, your problem will be resolved. You most likely have a CHARGING cable, not a DATA cable and you need a solid DATA connection for Android Auto to work...its sending data to your car constantly and if you keep swapping out the same cheap CHARGING cable, you wont resolve anything. Take the time to buy the cable I provided and the problem will be resolved. I had the same issue you are having, and my Android Auto would work, then hang, reboot, work, then hang then give errors. I got the new DATA USB cord and everything has worked flawlessly since.
When I took my iPhone in to have the glass replaced, the guy took a tool and cleaned out the lightning connection plug and removed a big wad of pocket lint. Just tossing in a shot here since your issue is phone or cord related. I know you have an android and they are perfect and would NEVER have a pocket lint problem like the iPhone but I thought I'd toss it out there anyhow!

And remember kids, since you don't have the right to prepare, do not do this yourselves!

I see the smiley however please point out where anybody has said that Android is perfect. We have never, ever said that. It's "Near Perfect(tm)" <- Get it right!

I'll try it, but it worked for 3+ years with that cable, and when I plug my girlfriends phone into my vette with that cable it works.

This seems legit. My screen is cracked too right now. I am trying to decide if I am going to try to have it repaired, or just switch it out. I have used the asurion insurance before with quick results.

Something is amok in your first sentence. Please simplify or translate?

I believe he meant "repair". Apple has a draconian policy disguised as a security measure to have them repaired only by an Apple store. That, however, is going to change, or has from my understanding.
