I have been using android auto for 4 years and love it. I have never had a problem until recently. 2 weeks ago, I all of a sudden started getting this message.
I am using the same cord that I have been the whole time. But that was still the first thing I thought of. I tried all 4 of the cables I use to charge my phone. Didn't help.
Next, I deleted and reinstalled the app. It worked for about 2 minutes and then went back to that screen.
This is why I absolutely hate tech! I’m a millennial too but I don’t think I’ve ever thought of using the damn app in my zl1 or C7Z. Hope you figure it out op
First thing I'd check is how the phone is handling being plugged in. Sometimes after the phone updates itself, that connection reverts to charging when plugged in. You have to set it to transfer data.
When this happens, I unlock the phone, swipe down the top of the screen. THere is a message saying that the phone is charging via usb. Open that box and select transfer data... At least on my Samsung S7... It doesn't happen too often.
Next thing I'd try is uninstall AA and reinstall it.
I also always ensure that bluetooth is on and the phone is plugged in before starting the car.
It's your USB cable. I had the same message until I realized I was using a cheap (slow) USB cable. I upgraded to this one and now my Android Auto works perfectly.

While I agree - I think I'd try a different cable, I've used dozens of different USB cables on my Android over the years and haven't found a single one that won't work with A.A. As long as you've tried a couple of different cables and are still having the issue - I doubt that's the problem. Likely that you got a pushed update that broke something. I forget if you might have already tried this, but try going into your phone, disabling A.A. and then reboot. Re-enable it and try it again. Another thing to try would be to pull the negative battery cable on your Vette for about 10 mins and then reattach it and see if that has any affect on the problem. Good luck!
FWIW, the only time I ever see that message is when I turn the car off with AA active (Waze, music, whatever) I see that the next time I turn the car on. If I switch to a different infotainment screen before turning the car off, I never see that message.
When I had that issue I bought these cables and they haven't skipped a beat. They are the six inch version because I plug them in the console. Have used them for a year now.
I started having the same problem when I went to settings, Developer Options, USB Debugging = on. Once I turned that off, I had no more issues. I had thought my cable had gone bad at first.
