Default Headlight question

This morning I found my high and low beam on drivers side is not working. Are they combined in one HID unit? I generally don't expect the high and low to go out together.

BTW: I'll be checking the fuse when I get home.

Thanks in advance!!

There is only one HID bulb for high and low beam. The difference between the two is a small deflector that moves to direct the light. Check fuses, but it may be the bulb or the ballast.

To get at the headlight pod, you will need to remove the nose of the car.

Really good plan you have there for sure. The nose is a bit of a PITA to get off. I've done it a couple of times but I'm done doin' that thing!

Wondering if I should have both sides done while 'they are there'.......... Guess it depends on how much the 'common labor' between the two is.

Yes anytime you have to remove the bumper to replace a headlight, you need to go ahead and replace both headlight bulbs. If one went out the other is soon to follow somewhere down the road.

HID bulb $163.xx each
Module $190.xx each
Body shop labor $125.xx per hour give or take

This link is for the 2018 model.

May be the module or may be the bulb that is not working.
I have read that if you remove the front wheel liners, there is a hole in the plastic where you can see the headlight access, but it is too small to replace the bulb unless it is cut out larger.

This post shows the picture.

Definitely do both bulbs. I had one go out after 5.5 years and 87K miles. Sure that the second bulb wasn't far behind. Pulled the nose and replaced them both. It took just over two and a half hours to pull the nose, replace the bulbs and re-install the nose. These are high pressure gas discharge bulbs, not traditional filament or halogen bulbs, hence the higher cost. The factory bulb is type D3S and these are made by both Philips and Osram. Mine came with Philips bulbs originally and RockAuto has the same Philips D3S HID bulbs for 63.00 each. Have been using these for a year now.

Good advice - better to do it now and not have to pull everything apart twice.

SInce you're in there, have you considered going to 6K on the lights? I changed my bulbs to the "white" that 6K gives rather than the slightly yellow of the OEM 4300K. I like the 6K for the white, any higher in the "K" range goes to a blue or purple shade (yuck).

Just a thought since you're going to be in the neighborhood...

I had a feeling this was the case. That's kinda what holds me off on doing anything up front. I'm going to wait until I buy and have everything ready before I tackle tackling that front bumper.

Dealer just quoted around $600 for labor, and worst case scenario the bulb is another $300. The Vette Tech seems to think it's more likely the ballast which I presume to be cheaper? I have the GE platinum warranty from Fitchner, I hope that will in some way 'help'. It is what it is...... awfully expensive headlamp.

Well, it was the bulb. No warranty coverage which is ridiculous. This is no ordinary 'bulb'.

I had the passenger side turn signal and DRL lights stop working on my 15Z. That requires replacement of the headlight assembly as the LEDs are not separately replaceable. Total cost billed to GMEPP was $1832.

Higher than stock color temperatures (4300K) actually provide less lumens of light on the road.

Had to replace the entire light assembly on passenger side of my 2014 > $400 to remove bumper, $180 for bulb, $1350 for the assembly = $1,930 Total bill.
Dealer did the work >>

As a preventive step, with the bumper removed, I replaced the driver side bulb at the same time, yep another $180

Good luck

Yes, it IS an ordinary bulb. Maybe I'm confused here (very possible!), but I keep reading people saying to take off the front bumper cover - except for C54u. What? To replace the entire unit, yeah, but... I just had a lamp go out, so I watched a vid of a guy showing taking the front wheel off, removing screws to the inner wheel well, removing the bulb and installing a new one. Put stuff back together and done. I'm waiting for the bulbs and hopefully it's that easy and can only believe that it is. Why would GM force owners to remove the entire front of the car to replace a bulb? Just doesn't makes sense to me, but I was slower than the other children.

And $300 for a lamp? I just bought 2 D3S 6000K lamps off eBay for $25. Are they name brands lamps? No, but does have a 2 yr warranty.
