Default Engine break-in question

I am in the process of purchasing a new 2019 Grand Sport 2LT. I will be picking it up tomorrow. The drive home is 300 miles on mostly interstate roads with 70mph speed limits. The owners manual suggest not to drive at a continuous speed or use cruise control during the first 500 miles. It will be painful but I think I can adjust my speed to different ratios on the way home, My question is: Will it hurt the motor to run it for a solid 4 hours right off the lot? I might could borrow a trailer and haul it home if this is a better option.

Should not hurt it but vary your speed. I took my NCM picked up Vette to my house in Northern NY. Most of it on the interstates and broke it in fine. Slow down speed up, take advantage of the traffic to do that. Many interstates have a on ramp right across from a off ramp. Go down the off ramp, then when you go back on the interstate run in through a couple gears getting up to speed. I'm not talking abusing your car but changing a bit of what you are doing to achieve a good break in.

For the first 500 miles you'll see the yellow/redline on the tach much lower...just be sure not to exceed those RPM's. After 500, it will automatically reset up to the normal levels. Congrats & good luck with your C7 !!!

300 miles is nothing and will be an enjoyable experience, just vary the speed and enjoy the drive

No, it will not hurt the motor to run it continuously for four hours or more. As others have said, vary your speed and you’ll be fine.

So... why not take back roads instead of interstate the whole way? That would be more enjoyable than a straight cruise on the interstate anyway...

I drove my new GS 1000 miles home in 2 days. The first 50 or so was city traffic and 2 lane highways with traffic lights and small towns. The rest was interstate. Just shift gears occasionally on the interstate and vary the rpms. Try to respect the rev limits on the tach.

Oh - check your oil when you get gas - then you will know how full it was when new. You need a warmed up engine, then wait 5 - 10 minutes before checking.

Ron

Sounds like I'm going to be ok from the comments posted. The comment about taking the back roads is a great idea. Attached are a few of the dealer photos as requested. Thanks everyone!

I owned new car dealerships for forty years. For decades I kept at least two new cars at home continuously. They started with basically zero miles and seldom ever went more than 3,000 before being rotated. There were a large number involved in a year's time.

After long discussions with a number of veteran techs and from my own experience as a Parts and Service Director, I never followed a break-in schedule. From day one I drove them as normal as did my spouse. We sold those cars ultimately to our customers and often they asked to specifically buy one assuming for some reason they were better cars because I chose to drive them. They used them for years and in some cases came back and bought another one.

These cars varied from run of the mill sedans, to exotics, to trucks, to multiple Corvettes. For the most part we serviced those cars through the next several years. In all those years we never once found what could ever be described as a break-in induced problem. Take it for what it is, anecdotal, but 300 miles however you drive it won't make a big difference.

Purchased my 2019 GS convertible from Mike Furman in Maryland on mid-November 2018 and drove it about 600 miles to SE Michigan. No issues. Vary the speed and no cruise I was told. Now have 15,000 miles and she runs like a champ!

Good news is you'll get passed the 500 mile break in within about days time. Get your oil changed and no more RPM limiter!

Enjoy. You'll love the GS!

I bought my 2017 Z06 in Atlanta and drove it home to Columbus, Ohio, doing all of the above suggestions (varying my speed, not using the cruise control, using the A8 paddle shifters in manual to change gears from time to time, etc.).

No ill effects. You'll be fine.

I drove our new 19 GrandSport from Criswell in Maryland home to Louisville, 580 miles. I started out varying my speed but realized later that traffic was varying my speed more then needed. Checked the oil twice on the way just to make sure. Changed the oil few days after we got back home.

No it won't hurt it at all. I drove mine on the highway the 2-3 hours back home from NCM.

You don't need to change your driving speed, you need to change gear a lot. Don't let it cruise in the highest gear, vary it from 4th to 7th at similar road speeds. You want to change the RPM of the motor so the rings set well.

Nothing to do with your engine break-in, but...
If you live in a "front plate" state, ask the dealership to remove the license plate bracket currently on the car and install the aeroplate bracket instead. The one shown in your photos can damage paint on the nose.

Here's a guy who gets it. Vettes are made for twisty back roads and the occasional late nights in Mexico, not for 70mph, cruise control crap we suffer through daily.

Also, congrats to you OP, beautiful car.
