My understanding of the GM Nav system is that its ancient and expensive and needs updating from time to time(at a cost). I use the CarPlay app in my car. No updates ever required and google maps is good as well as Waze. I use Waze when on the interstates. Google maps is more detailed for in City use. Good Luck with your choice.
GM Navigation just sucks. Complete waste of money for me. I've used it just to try it out and see how reliable it is. It always takes me on routes that are much longer than needed even when I know there might be a quicker route. Pfffttt…. Also, it doesn't make any financial sense to pay for the Nav updates from GM when you can use Google Maps or similar phone apps for free. They are more reliable and accurate.
I did the upgrade and it was a simple install. I did run into a problem when I took the car in for the Android update (this was back in mid-2016 when the system needed to be updated to enable Android). After the software update, navigation was no longer operational and I had to send the HMI unit back the the e-bay seller to have it re-flashed.
"Plug and Play Installation ( due to the nature of where the modules are located in the Corvette, this is an advanced time-consuming install )"
That discourage me, will continue with the iphone on a support in front of the screen and spend this money on gas!
Thanks anyway for the info!
$1400 you get CarPlay + Nav... so yeah not cheap. You can piece it together yourself much cheaper via eBay, but you will need the HMI module programmed to your VIN.
The link above has a video showing you the steps, its not that bad. I've pulled both the HMI and radio module to do some troubling shooting so got a feel for the work involved.
Just use Waze, a much better GPS, it's free, and works great, plus people input police and accidents that you are driving into, and counts down the mileage to that area.
Much better than any GPS out there on the market!

And that depends on what year Corvette he has. Since he doesn't mention the year car, he might not have the option to use Waze, or carplay or etc....
If you have the Homelink visor garage door opener, one thing to remember is to reattach the power connector for the opener or you'll get some practice disassembling the trim again... Don't ask how I know...
