Seven (7) Corvettes over 30 years - 900,000+ miles - have never needed a tender....oh, wait.... I DD my cars.....
Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm an Adam Henry - but isn't the first time I've been called that - spent 22 years in the Navy.... am now 79 and don't care!
Well. it you are like some of us that own a few cars, you can't drive them all daily.. I've got two cars in the garage, along with two motorcycles, the AVT, and the lawn mower, all of them live on battery tenders when not in use. (plus my daily tacoma, and the wife's Kia that live outside and aren't on tenders)

BZ Navy... MM1(SS)
Well, actually, I split the DD duties between a C7 and a 32-year old 328 GTB Ferrari.... (Navy JOC-8148)
Forget the plug-in socket in the rear cargo area and use the direct connection pigtail that came with the Battery Tender. I too had problems with the rear socket and didn't like having to close the rear hatch on the Battery Tender wires either. You can connect the hot wire from the pigtail to the side terminal on the fuse box under the hood (the owner's manual shows you where it's located). I found that the best place to connect the ground wire is to the frame bolt located in the area below the alternator. It was the only bolt that I could find nearby that provided a good ground. There is a male to female quick-disconnect on the Battery Tender pigtail and you can tuck it down by the fender when the Battery Tender is disconnected and not in use. When the Battery Tender is connected, I plug the male/female pigtail disconnect together from the charger, hang the wire over the fender and close the hood without pushing it down and latching it. That way, it's simple to disconnect the Battery Tender , close the hood and you're ready to roll. That plug-in connection in the back does not give you a solid electrical connection like the direct wired connection under the hood. I hope my explanation makes sense.
