My $100 Garmin that can be programed through my computer has free updates 4 times a year. I use that when traveling out of the area and see no need to update my 2016 system. It would be a total waste of money.
My experience with nav updates from both Ford and GM have left me waiting for 3-4 years between update purchases, and then at the end of the year when they're "on sale" for about $100 vice the $160 "normal" pricing
Several years ago on both my C7 and 2011 Mustang I ordered OEM updates only to find they excluded major highway changes (I-15 NB into Las Vegas and CA 180/168 NB to Clovis interchange), despite the changes being at least two years old... NOT IMPRESSED

And, frustratingly, the $100.00 Garmin is superior in other ways as well.
Car navigation systems are ridiculously poor, especially given the cost. The only advantage is they are integrated into the car.

I scratch my head at why manufacturers insist on reinventing the wheel with their own marginal "in house" navigation systems when they could contract the system and updates with a company whose business is nav systems..
We purchased and installed the 2020 update, #84667844, last October.
Hopefully, they will come out with a 2021 version in a month or two.
But, given GM's history of shafting customer support, we may not ever get another one.
Nothing to do but wait and see. I like the way the C7 Nav is integrated into the car (HUD, mutes music during instructions, etc) but will survive quite nicely if I have to go to Waze or Google.
One thing interesting is both the 2014 and 2015 Nav Systems take part number 84898439 while 2016 through 2019 cars take part number 84667844. Both part numbers are 2020 updates. I could believe the 2014 Nav system was different than the 2015 since the PDR was packaged with the Nav system in 2015 but the Nav system must have been the same for those two years and changed in 2016. The question is what changed? Do the 16 through 19 versions have features the 14/15 versions don't have.

Exactly, unless Garmin refuses to work with them.
Perhaps Garmin counts on the incompetence of the competition to maximize its sales.
I just got it and it seems to work fine! I had a glitch after the update, but, they fixed it over the OnStar,
I wonder if I had a glitch. I drove mine during update and now I'm wondering if it somehow reverted to an older version. If that's even possible. Mine is a 2019 and never updated before this. But it seems to have come up with wrong directions a few times. I don't have Onstar. What was your glitch?
Nav updates should be done every 3 to 5 years. 95% of the time, roads around your area do not change and its more of a POI update than anything else. When you do purchase an update, wait for the $99 sale, they offer it every year. I've done it twice (once for my 14 and once for my 17) and have always paid $99.

I just did the update in January, and now it says you can do it while you are driving. I drove down the Coast and it did fine!
What is the part number on your update, and when did you buy it? Our part # is 85151116. Something may have changed.
I purchased and installed the 2022 update in ours last October (2021), the instructions say at the top of the sheet in bold letters to leave the car in Park for the entire installation. Then in the body of the instructions it says in bold letters again to "ignore the message on your navigation screen that says you can drive the vehicle while performing the update. This could damage your system."

They seem to be pretty emphatic about it.
As usual, I waited until the offer was about to expire, and bought it in December. I waited until the first nice day, put the top down, and drove down PCH to Malibu. It seemed to upload without a problem. I did what the instructions said and used the "Voice Command" for the address, and it came right up. It functioned without problem on the way home. I do not have the part number any longer.
The last update, I did what it said, let the car idle for 45 minutes, and it did not take! I was on the Left Coast and it showed I was on the East Coast. I had to make contact with OnStar twice, via the rear view mirror, before we got it straightened out. It was a pain. The second guy, who straightened it out, told me I could drive the car, while it downloaded.
