Personally I would say no. I don’t t think I have used the gps but a couple times tho. I always use waze or google maps, they are always up to date. And never had any issues with CarPlay
As I understand it, 2016-2019 MYs have a newer generation (i.e., v2.5) Infotainment/GPS system than than 2014 & 2015 MYs. Recent discussion is focused on the latest (V.2022) update. It's possible that's not compatible with your system.
This is what I showed him while I was at dealer and was told it may not show up right away? Seems weird that the new update numbers change with others and this is an older software from what I’ve seen. Very confusing as to what is really going on. I only really wanted the newer version for the POI and places that have been added in the last 7 years.
The dealer did the download, I did not buy and receive a USB loaded upgrade like others seem to have done.
Dealers may have another method of acquiring MAP updates, but they're not normally downloadable. Because of their size, they're delivered via USB stick. What you describe sounds more like an Infotainment system software update.

I'm no expert, but that seems like a very dated map. A search for that Map version indicates it was available in January of 2015. Moreover, with all due respect to your dealer/tech, new version info should be immediately available upon update completion.
These updates are simple to install. I recommend doing it yourself, or finding a new dealer/tech that better understands the process.

I totally agree, my mechanic there is fantastic but it was just another person who did this install. The did say it was a Radio update too. I think I’ll ask them to refund my 99.00 or just order the USB Stick and install myself. Thanks for the help.
Is there anyway of figuring out if this is really the last update for the C7? I have a 2017 C7 and would surely get the update if was the last time it would be offered. Does anyone have experience with another vehicle type where the end of the line meant no more updates? On one hand it makes sense, on the other I would think there would be some kind of industry maintenance requirement for supporting late model equipment.
Not 100% sure about GM but usually, car manufacturers provide updated maps for at least 5 years past the end of a model run. It is a business decision in the part of the manufacturer, if there is demand for it and they can make a profit, they will update and sell it. Some companies do it for a longer period. The map update also depend on the hardware and software that is in the head unit of the vehicle. Recently I received the complementary $50 off on the NAV update for the 2012 Acura TL that I no longer have. The map update offered is a 2021 version, so they are still supporting their model that went out of production in 2014. I just checked for updates for Honda Odyssey, and you can get a 2021 map update for an Odyssey going back all the way to 2005, 16 years and they are still updating the maps for it, because a whole lot of those vans are still on the road and they don't have Car Play and Android Auto.
Personally, once I was able to connect my phone to the car, I stopped buying map updates. When I did buy them, I did it every 4 years, since to me the minimal updates and my travels using the vehicle did not warrant spending $100-150 every year. 4 years was able to capture a reasonable amount of changes. Also, all in car NAV updates are usually about a year behind Google.
Thank you Vip for the info. If I get it now, I will have it to use for the next couple years till the C8. I really do like the updated speed limits in the HUD. I kind of rely on them since I have the similar readout in the BMW. Again, thanks for taking the time to provide your experiences.
GM is not renowned for supporting Nav systems in vehicles that are no longer in production.
You could look in the C6 section here and see what was the latest update is for the C6 Nav, last produced in 2013. Currently they aren't selling any updates at all for the C6, but knowing when they stopped might be a hint for us.
When the map info is on a disc like the C6, there may be other makers who continue to update their system longer, and be able to use one of those discs. Our 2009 could use some versions of the Toyota disc.
With the VIN-specific updates used in the C7, that's probably not an option.
Based on the entire thread, I did order the update. This way I get to use it. Since I plan to maybe go with a C8 in 2023, the maps would be kind of out of date by 7 years (based on an original 2015 data base). If they do become unavailable, I would regret not doing the update.

I purchased and downloaded the latest map update to my 2016 Z51 last week. Took about an hour in my driveway and I ran the test and the correct address showed up. However, when i went to the software info in settings, the old 2017 number still appeared.
I called the service number and they said that sometimes the unit does not update the latest software code. Unlike previous updates which had multiple ways to verify the latest version was in fact loaded. This new version has only the one address for verification. They told me as long as the correct address shows up, the download was successful. End of conversation. I just wanted it for a backup if service is interrupted while on my annual road trips out west.
Checked a week later and it still shows the old 2017 software number.
A lot of good information here. One thing I really like, and that also surprises me, is that there are no responders telling us how stupid we are, and should be using Android Auto or Apple Car Play.
For Me, the one time I paid for the update and would drive directions where I know the most efficient route and run Waze and compare directions provided for a week, I quickly determined that I wasted my $150 and I continue to run Waze on my infotainment screen exclusively. Also, if Waze , Google Maps and Maps update their platforms all the time and pushes it to the users for FREE then why doesn't it happen with the factory nav? I think that because they have a vendor that supplies the nav maps for GM cars, they only give you a little at time in the updates hoping you will keep coming back to pay for more updates and get revenue for both GM and their Nav Map Vendor but won't ever get another dime for me!
I think most of us use our cell phone for Nav, especially those of us with Apple Carplay / Android Auto.
I would still consider the update however because I do use the speed limit display in my HUD and it bothers me that it is out of date and occasionally incorrect leading me to drive the wrong speed.
Guess I missed something. How do you get it to display the speed limit on the HUD? I can see it on the dash but it doesn't even show on the NAV screen. 2015
^^^
No Nav system is perfect, or everyone would use that and ignore the others.
The factory Nav has the advantages of displaying turn info in the HUD, doesn't need cell connection or eat data, mutes music for directions, good graphics, doesn't require removing cellphone from your belt or plugging in wire, covered by warranty and extended warranty, virtually theftproof, etc.
Other systems have their own advantages and disadvantages. Everyone should decide what works best for themselves, use it, and ignore the people who think everything else is junk.

Well I ordered the USB stick and received it today. The dealer is giving me a free Mobile 1 Oil change with a free gas tank fill and a car cleaning. He said it was easier then refunding the money to CC. I’m fine with that. I’m very happy with Dealer just wish they had a little better Techy/Software people. My Mechanic is Awesome there but doesn’t do much of the Tech stuff I guess.
