Long time no post for me. Been busy with other things...
Anyway, took my C7 to the dealer for some routine maintenance and because the check engine light was coming on. To my utter horror, he told me that the fuel pump needed replacement and that doing one of them would cost me around $3600!!! And that I should do both of them because they have to disassemble a lot of the back end, torque tube, etc. and that that'd run me a total of $5600!!! I'm definitely no mechanic and I have read that they are very labor-intensive to replace but $5600 seems like highway robbery. Is this close to correct? Is this common?
Are there any other places/repair shops in the North San Diego area that may do this for a lot less money?
The C7 has 2 electric low pressure pumps in the rear gas tanks (the main pump and a lift pump) and then has 1 mechanical high pressure pump on the engine. The gas tank pumps are not cheap to replace, they are very labor intensive as the torque tube, rear cradle and rear end / transmission need to be dropped in order to drop the gas tanks to access and replace those pumps.

Thanks but would you call $5600 a fair price for the job? I called another shop here and they quoted ~$3000.
There is a lot of labor but that seems excessive. I would start out first by getting a second opinion. Is car running fine? Could you do any logs to see what’s happening?
$5600 is excessive IMHO. $3000 (second opinion) is a little more reasonable. Saw a FB video that showed how much needs to be taken out to get to the fuel pumps. Car runs fine, no noise and no loss of power, etc. Brought it to the dealer for some routine maintenance and because the check engine light was consistently coming on. I work from home so I don't need to drive it much.
Another consideration is that some shops cite being busy like one of them said he couldn't start work on it for 2 weeks. Not sure about logs - I have no diagnostic equipment.
Sorry I cant help with the quote. But if the car is running fine I wouldnt proactively change the fuel pumps. Id clear the codes and wait and see. How old is your battery? Old batteries can throw false codes.
Sorry but I'm not really interested in how the fuel pump works, etc. As I said, I'm no mechanic and I'm not interested in becoming one. I was more just interested in trying to find out if this was really that expensive or could I have it done for considerably less money. Found a shop that will do it for around $2500 so that's a real saving. I'm gonna go with that.
My wife would divorce me if I told her we have to spend $5600 dollars to replace the fuel pump in the Vette. This is enough to make me want to sell it.
That’s way too much money to fix that. I had a fore innovations full triple in tank kit with all new lines and return regulator and port injection done for less than that ( excluding the second ecu). Check out a fore twin pump and get a speed shop to quote it. If you have a manual the rear end & gear box doesn’t need removed.
For decades once our vehicles, 3x Vette's included, have been out of warranty, I take them for all repairs to our trusted indie mechanic. They do as good or better a job, for half the price or less. If you don't have one, I'd ask around and find one in your area.
