Looks like that is the core issue. I didn't realize the handle was two pieces, I thought it was a single piece and wedging between would split the seam. Will correct. Also release the 'top' part can be pushed in a little more.
Thanks folks!

What 3M tape??

I think you should read the installation instructions, then reinstall accordingly. The tape you asked about is underneath the top of the adapter. It comes with a protective cover that is to be removed before installation.

I had the printed instructions it came with. The online version is much clearer. I'll redo install.

I didn't see mention of the tape in the instructions below.

In fairness, I haven't read the instructions in years. I see the mount point and I'm off to the races. I've been using ProClip for what seems like decades. Assumed it was in there... I am confident that when it is installed correctly, you'll be happy with it and the movement that you observed will be gone.

Mine did not pop off or slide under normal use. But, if I tried to adjust the phone position, it would sometimes pop out. I put a zip tie around it, and no more issues.

I have a 7-speed and bought the extension, but ended up not using it. Found that the phone was far enough over to not be a hindrance when shifting.

Also, when I installed mine, I fit the 'hook' (finger?) into the gap in my grab handle, then pressed the remainder of the mount over the top of the handle. Snapped right in and didn't seem to scratch anything. Fits solid!
