Quarter panel upper intake vent question

Quarter panel upper intake vent question
For coupes that do not have the transmission cooler and rear axles cooler inside the quarter panels, what, if anything, do the upper intake vents connect to? There won't be any ductwork that leads to the coolers, so...??

I replaced mine with Z06/GS style vents - just gives the car a sportier look.
