Previous owner had the shift boot off as it had slid down slightly. I figured I might as well check it out. Finally got the chrome plastic ring to rotate and slip
down which allowed me to remove the shift ****.
Lo and behold down on the shifter there was a o-ring doing nothing.
I believe that belongs inside the top of the boot if there isn't one there. I'll post a pic. The staple shown in the pic is only on 2015 or 2016 I believe. Not sure how the newer ones are done. I also just bought a car that the boot won't stay up, but the o-ring is in the top of the boot. Maybe it's missing the staple? I'm still working on that. Some people have removed the boot plate, turned it inside-out and wrapped a wire around it or put a little zip tie there. Then flip it back inside-in. Re-assemble.
