It depends on where I fill up. But it never fills in the normal position. Usually I put it at the 90° position and that's fine. But last week at a place I've never been to I had to resort to the 180° position as shown.
What I have found with my C7 is that if I fill up the tank when it's close to empty already, the gas flow will kick off frequently, but if I'm at 1/4 tank, or better yet 1/2 tank when I fill up, the flow will not stop (or might stop once and then need to be restarted) So if I'm filling it when the level is lower, I just hold the nozzle at a light pressure until it's added a few gallons, then I click on the nozzle lock for the rest of the fillup. Over the years I've learned which stations near me are more susceptible to cutting off early compared to others, as there seems to be a difference there too (some are way too sensitive) I know that they say this is common with a lot of cars that have cap less fuel systems, but my daily driver Civic has a cap less setup and it NEVER clicks off the gas flow until the tank is actually full, no matter how empty the tank might have been when I started filling it. That car does have one annoying thing when filling up though. When the pump clicks off I have to wait at least 5 seconds before taking the nozzle out, otherwise a bit of gas comes spilling back out. I rarely ever have that happen in the C7.
Costco is my goto place. On the way home, cheapest is the area (people have complained on TV about how the mom and pop shops are being run out of business by then) and I can get cashback at the end of the year.
I set it to the lowest setting and let it rip. No twisting, turning or whatever. If I had trouble with it clicking off too early, it was with one particular pump. Enough complaints and they changed it. Problem solved. I have used other pumps with no issue. Maybe it is because I do not set it for maximum?
BTW, my tank is always on empty when I amat the gas station so I don't know about partial filling.

I have had better luck at Costco stations as well, possibly because they always seem to have the newest pumps/hoses there. The ones in my area are often replacing their pumps and hoses. The problem with Costco for me is that we can only get 91 octane there, and a couple of years ago it used to be ethanol free as well but now it's E10. For the past year I've started using Shell V Power 93 octane pretty much exclusively (with the occasional use of Ultra 94 from Petro Canada) My C7's engine pings at part throttle when I use 91 so I can definitely see why GM strongly recommends the use of 93.

It pings? That is unusual. I have not had a ping in newer cars yet. Not with 91. I've had it scanned and 4he knock counter isn't showing anything different between 91 and 93. I never did 87 but I have done Costco 91 vs Shell 93 for all my cars. How many more knock counts on 91 vs 93? My scan didn't show much difference but I am totally stock with just a bit of enhancement from the Diablew tune.
i use Costco exclusively for all my vehicles unless there is some kind of emergency situation. i have never heard pinging or knocking, tho i doubt i would hear it with the top down and the exhaust open. I only use 91, as 93 is not available in CA. I have never used 87. I did find and use 93 the few times i found it across the USA during the Caravan.
I did not notice any difference.

I have used 87 but that was all there was. Top down or not, IIRC, the knock sensor detects the ping and reduces the timing faster than you can. So how can anyone hear pinging unless it is so bad that it is out of the ECM range of adjustment?
Despite the theory of whether or not we should be able to hear pinging, I too would to hear it occasionally in our C5 under light-moderate throttle using 91 or 93. I never heard it under full throttle, not sure if the ignition tables were more conservative under full throttle or perhaps the engine noise drowned it out. The A4 in our C5 seemed like it would lug the engine sometimes, making ping more likely.
I don't recall ever hearing it in our 2006 or 2009 or current 2017, with a total of 200k+ miles.

Maybe you heard it, maybe you heard something else. IDK. Either way, it isn't relevant. What you hear doesn't retard the timing. What the ECM, via it's sensors "hears" does. The KS is an acoustic microphone which will transmit a signal to the ECM if it hears sound within a certain range to inform it of pinging. THAT is the critical signal so maybe try tapping into the datastream and see what the ECM considers pinging? That is what I did with the modified C4 as did the tuner on the dyno. IF the knock counts remain the same between 91 and 93, going up isn't necessary. IF it doesn't, well, we have a problem.
I'd be afraid of damaging something in that forced bending fashion. C7 fuel tanks don't take that many gallons, so, it doesn't take all that long to measuredly dispense the fuel until full.

I had the same issue with my C5 and my C6 as well when running 91 octane, I would hear mild pinging at part throttle in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range. Never at full throttle though, and never if I was running 93 or 94 octane.
I've noticed that it is pump specific and that few particular pumps have the similar effect on my other cars till it was replaced. Just avoid that particular pump and life is good.
I admit to the habit of using the same pump, everytime. I switched to a different pump and was able to fill up without flipping the nozzle. Another data point indicating it may be pump specific.

Costco gas 10 to 12 pumps. When I switched, the problem of it clicking off went away. It had the same issue with my other vehicles. Changed pump and we never had that issue.
Yes! Just got a new to me C7 and went to my usual gas station to fill up. Kept clicking off. Tried backing out a bit, rotating a bit and kept clicking off after seconds. Felt like a fool. Managed to get $5 of gas... Thought maybe was the pump and left. Came back another day, different pump same station, but same clicking off. Tried turning sideways... clicking off. Did a full 180 upside down and worked... Will be trying a new station station next time.
