I used to have an M5 with an S85 Motor in it, before the LT1 it was probably my favorite engine I had ever owned. But the LT1 is a much better motor with far less complexity.
One thing the German's do is engineer a lot of sophistication and complexity in their motors, but with the LT1 you get the reliability, low cost, flexibility and much lower parts cost.

I would take out the lt1 and put a(modd) optispark lt1 in its place.
I was going to say... Been there, done that with my 1994 Z28. The 1995 and later were better after they added the vacuum vent line to help keep moisture out. I installed a LT4 hot cam in that car and while I was at it I converted to the 95+ opti setup. But I only put about another 20k miles on it in that configuration so not totally sure the vent would save the day. My original non vented opti shirt the bed at 76,000 miles.
