Default Cylinder deactivation

I posted the following question in the introduction of new members section and was advised to present it here: When 4 cylinders are deactivated via the AFM system, are the same 4 cylinders deactivated every time this mode is active? Additionally, is the valving altered to prevent those affected cylinders from going into compression mode which would appear to present a drag on those cylinders providing the torque? My thinking is that if anyone can provide insight into this, it would be you guys. Hopefully this will bring forth some thought - provoking processes and not having the answer will not diminish my enjoyable experience with my 2015 C7. Thank you for having me and let us hope all newbys such as me are not PITAs. Til next time,
Ralph

Thanks guys for your excellent explanations on how the ACM works. My concern was that closing both intake and exhaust valves on those deactivated cylinders would create an engine power loss due to those pistons having to compress what remained in the cylinder with no consequent generation of power. Understanding the decompressing of that gas adds to the power of those deactivated cylinders. The more I learn about these modern engines, the more convinced I am that time and age has rendered my ability to work on them has passed. However, this does not negate the willingness to understand how they work and will be content just to change the oil and wax the hell out of my C7. Thanks again.
