A short shifter has been one the first mod I've done to every one of my vehicles over the last 10 years. However, this car was the first one that I did not hate the stock shifter.
I came from an '11 Mustang GT with a Barton shifter, which was hands down my most favorite shifter I've ever used. And even coming from that, I didn't hate the OEM one.
However, after reading through this thread and seeing what people are saying about the MGW, I think I'm going to have to pick one up. Thanks guys... another item to add to the list of upcoming purchases.
I have two GM documents that talk to the grinding in shifting from 1st to 2nd. It's a known issue that they have no fix for at this time. If anyone wants to see these documents, PM me with your email address.

The fix is to get someone that knows how to drive.
Never had a "grinding" problem on my C5 or C7.

I am really leaning towards the MGW, flat stick, and ball. This is the longest I've gone without swapping out the stock shifter... starting to wear thin on me!
I went 12k miles with the stock shifter, finally got the 2-3 up shift down.
But when I made a hard 3-2 downshift it would feel loose, it even poped out of second a couple times. 2 pop outs in 12k miles is hardly worth mentioning. However, maybe 1 out of 10 times it would go into second in a way that I wasn't sure it wasn't going to pop out.
My MGW seems to have fixed it. I will find out for sure at laguna seca on the 21st. For now, the tighter feel and positive engagement give me more confidence in the canyons.
You are right that sometimes it feels like there is a two stage engagement, and you have to make sure to get past the second detent to get the gear fully engaged, or it may pop out.

And that is all inside the transmission. The shifter has no control over that other than how much leverage can be applied. The stock shifter with its longer throw has the leverage advantage.

I 100% believe you, but after the mgw I literally don't feel that 2nd click anymore. That little tiny pre-click that made me think if I drop the clutch and rev it out, it may pop out is gone.
