When I changed my differential oil last summer in my 15 C7 Z06 it was a quart low and I let it drain overnight. It took all 3 quarts to refill it and it was right at the bottom of the fill hole. GM also told me my valves and heads were fine in my 08 C6 Z06 LS7 and they ended up being replaced

I'm not speaking in hypothetical, actually. The owner's manual tells you how to fill it the way it does because it's the most practical way to ensure it's refilled to a safe level. The manufacturer and the assembly plant's quality control procedures make sure the level is what it should be.
