Default AFM problems in a 6.2L

I had a lifter failure in my 6.2L Sierra PU. Left me stranded 1000 miles from home. Truck in the shop for 40 days and $6700. later I was back on the road. Learned a couple of things, Lifters are covered under "emissions" not mechanical so the coverage is only 2 years and 50K miles (truck only has 55K miles). The Ranger I bought works great BUT will not pass emissions test in MA. Question, does the Manual mode of the transmission eliminate the AFM ??

For the future edification of those in these forums, I never cease to be amazed by what dealers will try and get away with. Mechanical lifters, or tappets, have absolutely nothing to do with emissions and are specifically part of the mechanical drivetrain, (specifically, the valvetrain), and are required in order for the engine to function.

Lifters ride off the camshaft lobes (as the cam spins in correlation to the crankshaft,) and moves the pushrods up and down, moving the pushrods which articulate the rocker arm. The rocker arm pivots on the valve via the valve spring which essentially, opens and closes the valves necessary for combustion when your pistons reach the top of the cylinder. You don't need any emissions theoretically for a motor to work, but (in the case of these Chevrolet single OHV motors,) you do need lifters in order for the engine to function.

And on top of that, emissions are supposed to be covered under a Federally mandated 8 year, 80k mile emissions warranty. If the Government says you need it in order to pass emissions, then it ought to be covered under the 8/80k emission warranty. Always ask them to show where in writing it says not covered and contact the auto manufacturer if you think you are being misled; ask them to clarify if a certain component is covered under warranty or not. (Sometimes when it is close, the manufacturer will allow a "good-will" gesture and cover all or some of the expense.)

From my experience GM is not the best at offering "...'good-will' gesture(s)..." to its customers.
