i see by the threads here that many people have had a similar issue with their backup vision. my 2014’s backup camera has been acting squirrelly. going dim, getting fuzzy etc at times. i’ve read some have cured the problem by cleaning the connector and reinstalling. guess i could try that but removing the rear fascia doesn’t look like something i wish to tackle. what i have noticed with mine is it only seems to go crazy in low light conditions. when i put the car in reverse while in the garage, the screen dims and flashes. as soon as the car backs into the sunlight, the screen clears up and works fine. if i put the car in reverse when in the sunlight or daylight, the screen displays as it should. only seem to have the problem in dim light or darkness. anybody else experience this?
ok now the system seems to be down. all i get is the service rear vision system message no matter what the ambient light is. before i go to the dealer and get financially raped, does anyone have experience with this? if so did you fix the issue on your own? i know some have cleaned the connector to the rear camera and it seemed to clear it up. any other possible fixes? please advise. i REALLY don’t want to be at the mercy of the dealer.
My 2014 Z51 has an issue where the camera just doesn't come on when the car is put in reverse (M7). The screen doesn't change from the normal "home" screen. Won't work at all when I first start the car and back out of the garage, then after everything is warmed up, camera works just fine. I'm thinking there's an electrical connection that's a little loose. Any one else experience something similar?
bit the bullet and took it to the dealer. turns out all it took was a software update to correct a problem with the existing software. i have the gm extended warranty and once again it would not cover the repair. if the screen was failing, or the rear camera or the rear vision module had failed, the warranty would have covered it along with the reprogram. but just a reprogram, no such luck. i could see if there was no warranty involved or the reprogram was for improved performance such as the mrc update, but a reprogram specifically done to correct a failing condition of existing software, IMO that should be covered. ok, end of rant!
I hear you there mmorse, I suspect that software updates would correct the problem I'm having as well. We'll see how annoying it gets... Not to get all fanboy my brand is better than your brand, but this is one thing that I think Ford is light years ahead of GM on. My daily driver is an Edge, and whenever there was a software issue that needed updating, all you had to do was log onto your owner site (vin specific), download the update on a usb flash drive, and plug it into your car. Done, free of charge, no visit to the dealer. I wish GM had a similar corporate attitude on software updating.

you are absolutely right. that is what gm should do. when there is a glitch in a computer based app and a revision becomes available to correct the glitch, there never is a charge for it. how is this any different? i realize i’m paying for an hours labor, in my case $150, but my extended warranty should cover that. better yet, employ a system like ford has.
well, the reprogram lasted all of one day. the service rear camera system is back and the screen flickers and goes dim. obviously, it’s not a software issue. at this point, i have no confidence in my local dealer being able to fix my car. now i have to fight with them to refund my money.

Any luck with the repair. My 2015 has done this occasionally.

When a repair isn't covered by the extended warranty sometimes it is worth a call to the warranty group to discuss the repair with them. Usually the shop inputs the labor and repair codes into the computer and it tells them whether the repair is covered or not. For example, on my C6Z I had the old GMPP warranty which rejected a repair to the dry sump because it involved replacing an O Ring inside the tank. The warranty clearly states O Rings aren't covered but because this was a $500 repair I thought it worth a call. When I explained to the person on the other end of the line what the problem was and the O Ring was inside the dry sump and part of the engine lubrication circuit they agreed the repair should be covered and told me to have the dealer service writer call them. The repair was covered at no charge to me. Sometimes when they determine what isn't covered they use simplistic terms and when things get more involved those terms don't always work so bringing it to the attention of a human gets you a work around.

already been down that road. the warranty people told me the software update is not covered but a new screen or camera is. i doubt it is a screen as it works for all radio and nav functions. only screws up when the back up camera is displayed. there is also the hmi module in the equation that i assume would be covered. my problem is that i’m looking at possible multiple trips to the dealer as the dealer told me the only thing they can do is chase parts until they find the problem. it could also be a faulty cable or just dirty connectors. they tell me there is no way they can diagnose the problem without replacing parts and see what happens. just seems to me they are not up to the task of dealing with a problem like this.
this is probably coincidence but it has been hot where i live the past few days. 95 and up. have had the car in reverse many times and the rear vision system has worked every time. that may indicate a cold solder joint somewhere in the system.

Shouldnt be a fight. I believe GM policy sets a 12mo/ 12000 mi warranty on any repair. Should be clearly stated somewhere on your service order.
