Nuts get loose and it will snap the stud. We had a truck roll one time because of that. As long as they're tight there's no play there but when they start to move around that's when you have the problem. This article explains it better than I did.
Make sure that the base of the lug nut matches the shape of your wheel, there are ball shaped ones and conical ones. Aftermarket wheels may vary. Also, aftermarket wheels may require longer studs to be installed to allow adequate engagement with the nut.
i purchased a set of black lug nuts off ebay for my gs. look good and work just fine. torque to spec just like the originals did. been running for about a year now and "0" issues.

Fair enough, but it's easy enough not to drive with them loose
So who makes a decent set of black ones (aluminum preferably) and who makes a reasonably priced set of open face lug nuts for the track? I'm not interested in $7 titanium ones to save 2 ounces.

I like the gorilla but they aren't open ended. I always check mine between sessions but I rarely have to tighten them except after the first session. I don't know who has the cheapest open ended nuts.
MCgards are the ones to get. They hold up very well.

I checked both these brands online and the have multiple options, even after entering the specific Corvette year, etc. any recommendations as to which one is better and which one has the better matching locking nut?

The Gorilla lug nuts use a special socket and all of the nuts are the same. Essentially they are all locking nuts but none are an actual locking nut if that makes sense. Personally I don't like locking nuts, I like having a socket that works with all the nuts. There are no moving parts to fail.
I've been looking for colors other than black and the only ones i can find are the cheap, anodized aluminum.
Any suggestions on where to go to get a good quality that has multiple/exotic colors?
I saw some titanium lug nuts on the Gorilla website that look like a nice satin metallic finish compared to the standard chrome or black finish.

I understand, however I have some Forgelines wheels I’m planning to install and would like some added security. At least something to keep away the amateurs. A friend of mine has a a custom set of wheels on his 911 and he has locks on each lug.

As long as you're not tracking you should be fine. I know that some groups don't allow locking nuts on track. Ymmv.

Thanks, I will probably order an extra set of open ended lugs for the occasional track run as I plan to use the OEM wheels/Cup tires. The lock nuts would be used on the street with the Foreglines.
