Unplug it and then Plug it back in and count the led flash sequence. That will tell you the software version. The current version is 8.6.1 the last I heard.

If you have the box and bought it new, there will be a sticker with the version of the unit on the box. 8.6.1 is the latest version. I just spoke with AFM last week.
I understand the upside of using this device but are there any downsides?
yep, you will be out $190 (which I found out I could have bought new for $160) and also you will bump your knee into the device often getting in the car. Finally, you may sometimes accidently tug on the Range device trying to open the hood latch 'cause both are adjacent to one another.

so except for the 1st one .... I have never even remotely come close to doing the last two

I have banged my knee a few times...only had the car a month now. I have also fumbled around trying to reach the hood latch and mistakenly tugged on the Range. The latch goes back a good way and since the car is so low it is not easy to visually see the latch.

Sounds like GM wasn't thinking of you when they designed your car or maybe you have a slow learning curve.
