Need to replace a brake caliper on my 19 GS. Dealer said I need to buy a new caliper. Don't they repair calipers anymore?? Anyone have a similar experience?
Fred
Did you ask the dealership why it needs to be replaced ??…repair is .3 hours of labor and the caliper cost is listed below whether you have ceramic rotors or not…at that price you can see why they want to replace.
I wonder if the dealership uses new brake calipers or remanufactured calipers. Hopefully new. I replaced the front calipers on a Ford truck and a Dodge Caravan. The replacement calipers came from Advance Auto and were remans. The Caravan’s original caliper seized up as I approached an intersection. A cloud of white smoke surrounded the tire and hood. People in other cars were honking at me and pointing at the wheel as if I did not know what was happening. Lol
Did you ask to see any photos of the caliper and where the leak was? The only thing that makes sense to me is that a piston seal was seeping fluid, not enough to actually drip. In this case, it's easier for them to replace the caliper but a rebuild kit is like $20.
Yes I saw the dripping. I don't know Y they didn't offer to just rebuild the caliper. Also need to replace the pads on both front wheels
Dealerships just love to make the easiest money possible and not do what's best for the customer. They charge you for the caliper and make money off that and then make money off the labor too. Doing the seal kit, they only make a few dollars off the seal kit and a few bucks off the labor, the rest goes to paying the mechanic. Make sure you get the old caliper back, don't let someone there just swipe it and throw seals in it and sell it. Someone here will buy it and rebuild it.

If you have non Carbon Ceramics, I have a full set of Black Brembo calipers recently pulled that only had 7000 miles on them. They are for sale. I switched to red. PM me if interested.
