I know there's a dozen or more threads on this but I thought I'd chime in with my slight variation.
I used these smaller submersible lights: Amazon 1.4x0.8 inch lights
FWIW, mine are larger, 2.7 inch OD, but the same deep recess so I used my favorite attachment 3M Dual Lock. Holds with more strength than Velcro but is thicker, higher than the recess.
Both layers in place on half. Upper right is piece of 3M Dual Lock with "mushroom side" facing up, ready to install on the empty side. Another similar piece with "mushrooms" facing down would be pressed into those facing up.
