Your 1st Mid-Engine
It still runs and still looks almost like new. It's 57 years old.

Always enjoy posting this pic of the 1st Porsche 356! Dr. Porsche knew the right place for an engine was in the middle. That was from working on the German Race Cars of the 1930's! However in 1948 Germany was still recovering from the War and it was too expensive. So he used the cheap "People's Car" and it's transaxle and other cheap parts. That continued until they knew the 911 type was too expensive and outdated and introduced the "good looking" 928 (IMO far better that the 911 type) in 1978 to replace it! They built those until 1995. BUT, mostly the US Market insisted on their old style, antiquated rear air cooled engine 911 type. So they hired Toyota Engineering to redesign the manufacturing and eliminate some of the hand built 911 type features.
It's relaunch was a big marketing campaign with "higher price." They showed they got a better weight balance and touted using titanium rear parts. However one of the car mags picked up on the lead added to the front bumper for that "improved weight distribution! (Not the performance thing for lower polar moment of inertia!) Have to give Porsche engineering credit for managing all the handling issues with 60+% rear weight. (The last number for a current car was 64% rear weight for now a water cooled boxer engine.) As Tadge said took them decades to eliminate the oversteer issue!
What I find funny, is IMSA allows them to move the 911 exterior shape car engine to the rear seat and make an ME! That is what was required for them to be competitive! (Saw two being built in Rock Hill SC 2 years ago at US Porsche Racing!)
Yep, even Zora drove a ME Porsche to a class victory in 1954 while working for GM! He had worked with Dr. Porsche in Germany before coming to the US, hence his early desire to have a ME Vette!
