My 2023 C8 was built on 8/4/23 and I picked it up on 8/18/23. Last night my car’s display came up with a software upgrade message which I let the car perform for 15 minutes. I guess all went well because the only thing I noticed different was the emergency brake was on when I restarted the car. Does anyone know what these software upgrades are and how often they occur? Do they happen automatically or do they have to be acknowledged first- I would hate to have them drain the battery.
How often software updates depends on your particular car configuration. Some cars get more than others. Your car will never do an update without your consent.
It is always a good idea to check your car a half hour or so after you authorized an update. This will give you a chance to intervene before the battery is drained if the update went bad. Keeping the driver's side window down and frunk lid open during an update will make it easier to access if the battery goes dead. Connecting a battery maintainer during an update may slightly extend the time before a battery goes dead during a bad update but it won't prevent a dead battery.
My car was built in Jan 2023 and hasn't needed an update yet. I just checked yesterday and there was nothing. Before that, the last check for an update was in May, and still nothing. Very interesting.
The latest update was installed without me. I noticed on my Chevy app that an install had taken place. The update popped up when I started the car last week but I ignored it. Now it comes up as a completed update. 🤷🏻♂️

There is something wrong with this picture. OTA updates will absolutely NOT install themselves until you give permission. You HAVE to accept the update installation when asked or it WILL NOT install.
Downloads, on the other hand, can happen by themselves if you have configured them that way in the update settings.
I finally received and installed my first software update tonight and it went well. Left the windows down and frunk open as precaution but went without a hitch, except it said it needed connected to apple carplay first attempt, so turned it on and left the phone in the car. Assuming this is normal?
So that is what I beleive, at least up to now, plus I don't see how an update can happen without initiation, since it involve temporarily disabling the car. But I do want to point something out. All of the information about being prompted for an available download and or an update that has been downloaded and is ready to be installed, that appears in the 2023 and earlier manuals is missing from the 2024 manual that I downloaded. Is it just an error. What is in there, and was in previous ones as well is statement that says they can deliver updates and changes without further consent (although it never says "install" without consent).
THE FOLLOWING CLIP IS FROM A 2023 MANUAL BUT APPEARS IN PREVIOUS MANUALS. I CANNOT FIND IT IN THE 2024 MANUAL THAT I DOWNLOADED. JUST AND ERROR?
THE FOLLOWING IS FROM A 2024 MANUAL, BUT ALSO APPEARS IN ALL PREVIOUS MANUALS. IT TALKS ABOUT DELIVERING UPDATED WITHOUT CONSENT, BUT DOES NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT INSTALLING THEM.
Same thing. My car was built 3 days later on 8/7. Came on after updating with parking brake. Then immediately prompted with terms and conditions confirmations and asked to do ANOTHER update. Hope it doesn’t stay like that frequency…
