Yep that story has been repeated for years. Some apparently have said it will bend wheels. That prompted Tadge Juechter (Executive Chief Corvette Engineer) to state in a long Ask Tadge post re bent Z06/Grand Sport wheels several years ago:

"I have heard from some people that there is a theory that running the car in Sport or Track can contribute to damaging a wheel. That is not true."

Perhaps they are referring to the risk that might occur when you hit a bump and the car loses traction and skids off the road. Watch race cars with even heavier springs and very stiff shocks hit curbs built into the sides of Race Track turns. Yep a wheel may come off the ground but a skilled driver will use to their advantage to increase cornering speeds. An unskilled driver could skid off the road! Perhaps that is their warning?

Controversial Curbing on Road Courses ...

If you hit a big enough pothole, you will damage your suspension regardless of the suspension setting. Happens all the time to all cars. A small one will do no damage regardless of suspension setting.

So, is there is a magic sized pot hole that just right - damage might happen with the stiffer setting, but not the softer setting? Perhaps.

Default Yes, it has happened to me. It is annoying

It works in all engine/shift modes, but its more aggressive in Sport or Track. Its described in the Owner's Manual. I don't know how well liked that feature is. When it does kick in, I usually find it annoying. It cannot be disabled.
Because if you do a short 'aggressive' stint it goes on and then it persists for maybe a minute. What I described for the BMW M mode is that it has a long term learning curve meaning to learns your driving style over time. It's not like an on/off aggressive/non-aggresive mode like the C8's is. I was able to drive in the most aggressive mode all the time without the transmission keeping the revs up for no reason.

It seems so goofy to me that we have to jump through all these hoops just to keep v4 mode from happening. Good hell man it’s a simple fix but they don’t want to give it to us. Such a small thing can be such a hassle. If I wanted a V4 I would have bought a Hyundai 🤡
