Default Transmission Filter. - sorry !

I can’t believe I’m going to ask this question, since I’ve already read hundreds of posts about this🤦‍♂️ . I took my car in last month for a two year service. As part of the service they did external transmission filter replacement. They used part number 24045729 and charged me $273 for that filter; plus $13 for fluid. It’s not listed on the invoice, but the service advisor told me they “flushed the system”
At that time, the car had 1500 miles

In today’s mailbox, I got a letter from GM that says that the transmission fluid must be replaced at 7000 miles or every three years. It also says that the filter needs to be replaced at 7000 miles, or at three years

So my question is this, what do I need to do next?? if I’m reading right it needs to go back in in 11 months but what are they going to do and what are they going to charge me to do it?

Keep in mind it’s a Sunday driver and I may put 1000 thousand miles a year on it.

Thank you!!

What year is your car. You have to do what the letter from GM says. The fluid has to be changed at 3 years. The filter has to be changed between 7-8000 miles, no matter how many times you have changed it before. This is what you need to do to keep the warantee up to GMs standards. The flush that they mentioned is NOT replacing the fluid.

Reread the letter again. The filter needs to be replaced between 7,000-8,000 miles (second paragraph, first line). There's nothing in the letter or your manual about the filter and three years. You need to replace it again before 8,000 miles (third paragraph).

The letter says the fluid needs to be replaced at 3 years, no milage requirement. The manual says check the fluid life monitor at 45,000 and change if needed. You'll probably hit the three year requirement before the 45,000 miles.

so next year I need to replace all of the fluid, which, according to the answers I’ve looked at could be anywhere from $800-$1500. Then at 7000 miles I need to replace that $236 filter again. Easy enough thank you!!

Correct except the filter between 7,000 and 8,000. Since you already did it once, if it was me, I'd wait until closer to 8,000.

Yes, on the fluid replace price, shop around as it seems dealer prices are all over the place. I did mine myself.

Default Just the facts ma'am

If you don't drive your car a lot of miles, the mandated DCT service is a heavy burden $$$ to bear. I.e. we needed to change the DCT fluid at 10K miles when we were at the 3 year threshold. Nuts to change high tech fluid after only 3 years. And change the DCT filter after 7500 miles. I traded my 1994 F150 several years ago with 160K miles on the clock. The transmission fluid had been changed once at 50K +/-. Jiffy Lube might have added some with an oil change since they check and top up all the fluids. But if they did, they made no big deal of it. Every day I owned it, when I put it in D it went forward. When I selected R it went backward. Every time.

Lol dude is here trying to compare a Ford E4OD to a C8 DCT! You do realize an E4OD is a C6 that has an OD right?- Yeah that same C6 released in 1966.

DCT filter change at 7,500 miles is included in GM's complimentary package. Why were you charged $273 for this service?

I was charged (with labor) like $600 for the service, and I fought with the dealer. They said I didn’t have enough miles for GM to pay for it.

What year is your car? If it is a 2023 or earlier they were incorrect, there is no minimum mileage for the engine oil filter and DCT filter change however it must be done within the first 2 years for it to be free. If a 2024 or later they were correct. Why did you have the DCT filter changed at 1,500 miles?

Its a 2023. I bought it two years ago brand new. I asked for the service to be done because it was my opinion that it should’ve been free. In fact, the dealer told me when I dropped it off that it would be free and then when I went to pick it up, they told me that GM denied the claim, because there was not enough miles to need the service

There is a memo (can't find it right now but see thread below) that states that the first free service is good for two years and it doesn't state a mileage requirement. I'd contact the dealer to discuss it with them and then Chevrolet customer care if the dealer can't resolve it. Many people (including me) with 2023s and earlier have got their service earlier than 7K miles.

Ok, I'm either confused or my dealer is. I called to ask if the tranny filter was replaced when they did the flush. They said yes, but it was the external filter. They said the internal filter will need to be changed at 45k. I didn't even know there were 2 filters for the tranny.

Has anyone else heard there were 2 filters?

There are two filters however your dealer is incorrect (surprise) that the internal filter needs to be changed at 45K miles. There is no required service interval for the internal filter.

There is no scheduled maintenance for the internal filter. Its only changed if there is an issue and the diagnostic procedure indicates a need to change it

But, when you said "flush" what did you mean by that?.

The tranny fluid flush was recommended with the filter change.

But what does it mean was done? Are you talking about the Hydraulic System Flush? That is part of the DCT filter change procedure. But its not a drain and fill. It just an internal computer controlled process with a goal of moving more debris to the filter before the filter is replaced.

I'm not a mechanic so I went with whatever the service advisor recommended.
