its a cool engine, but looks like a nightmare to work on. Hard pass from me.
black wing should have been called black hole. GM dumped money into it and then pulled the plug when they fired the "visionary" who promised $ but delivered bills
bore and stroke and cam timing are whacked on the black wing and it's a one year dumpster fire for caddy that won't see light in the vette
I do hope they pull out all the stops similar to the c4 LT5 and get a clean sheet motor ready for the TT. You can keep the flat plane crank. Much ado about very little.
Nascar motors rev just fine with a billet crank and more displacement so I'll let those ferrari guys keep the frequent maint bills that will crush the bank.
Even the old LT5 which is a dirt simple DOHC is expensive, ask me how I know.
To RacerX Point, the F1 cars also use the battery to spin up the turbo and the battery to fill in the turbo lag. The Hot V seems problematic to me because the current car was designed around exhaust on the outside and intake in the ceneter. Not sure what is to be gained in practical terms for the C8 with Hot-V.
I am fairly convinced if the bore centers have to be the same AND if they are the same as a small block, it seems that some variation of 5.5L to 6L makes sense. If the C6Z was 7L and reved to 7K limited by valvetrain and head flow. Some variation of this with DOHC and VVT gets you to 8-9K. Shorter stroke for sure to keep the piston speeds down. FPC or CPC depending on what they can make reliable. Since the Mercury Marine LS7 with DOHC makes 750HP, I assume there will be alot of options that get it done NA for us.
Then the TT will be the ZR1
Don’t forget that MMs SB4 is a 7L DOHC NA motor w 750hp at 7500+. Uses LS7 bottom end.
I’m still hoping that GM will used the black wing motor.
And why not. The motor has some insane designs. And makes a lot of power. All the tooling is in place and it’s proven.
i looked at the details of the Blackwing engine. Peak HP is 5800 rpm and the stroke is longer than the bore. Clearly designed for the bigger and heavier Cadillacs. The “Hot V” design may be interesting but there isn’t much of of an advantage in the C8 because it has plenty of room for turbos in the traditional location. I think the C8 engineering looked at using the Blackwing but decided it would need too many revisions to make it work in C8, so they said “pass”.
I would love a FPC NA Z06 but an LT2 with 2 small turbos producing 625hp would work great and reliable. And not expensive.
Several outlets are reporting ONE story from a salesman at a dealership, lol. Its great how everyone repeats one story and then the more outlets that repeat the same story somehow gain credibility.
