Default Just the tips😁

I got my C8 home from the PPF shop yesterday and decided to do my first project. Replacing the square tips. There isn't too much info out there on how to do it so I thought I'd start a thread in case people had questions.

First off shout out to RearWheelDrive for having a super informative YouTube video on how to take the bumper off. He did it to get the high wing spoiler installed so just follow the video until you get the bumper off. He mentioned a nut that's a bitch to get off on the right side and he's not kidding. I had a tool that really helped me out. It's a flexible extension. It made the job a breeze. Pic below.
https://youtu.be/z1dgaDu1Mj0
The best tool to cut the tips off is actually not a Dremel. It's actually a jigsaw with a good metal blade or 4. What you want to do is cut parallel to the exhaust pipe as shown in the pic below. There are 2 welds about an inch in length on each pipe. I cut the weld on the top and bottom on the first tip and slid it off. On the rest of the tips, I cut the weld on the top off and then bent to tip up and down a few times and that broke the bottom weld off. Then I used a 4" grinder to smooth out the weld line. I bought 60MM Inner diameter for the inlet and 110MM (4.5") for the outlet. They fit perfectly and really filled out the space. Hope this helps someone else that's trying to tackle this project. It took about 3 hours to do. I'd say 45 minutes was wasted on using a Dremel without any good results. Once I got the jigsaw out it was WAY easier.

The angle was actually flatter than in this pic. Pretty much flat against the pipe.

There's about a 1/16" of an inch gap between the pipes with 4.5" tips.

This is the tool I used for that nut on the right side of the car. Made the job really easy.

Just showing how it bends.

They look great.

How are the Akrapovics attached? Did not see that info…unless I somehow missed it.

Cheers!

What an improvement on the exhaust; I do not like the factory tips either.

I think it's 12" but I added non flexible metal socket extensions to get it to reach.

They're installed with clamps. I'll add the link to the ones I bought from eBay.

Thanks everyone. Between that and the tinted tail light inserts from paragon I'm really liking the back end a lot better.

You could have hijacked my other thread anytime. Thats the best answer I've see. Gotta take off the bumper for spoiler anyways. Nothing like taking apart a brand new expensive car and hitting it with a sawzall! 😎🤓

You should of seen my neighbors. Bumper in the grass, sparks coming off the grinding wheel. They thought I was crazy. It was a sight to behold. 🤣

Been googling my but off and struggling with finding the tips I want. I really like the ones the Op used but want the barrels to be black not chrome or stainless. I have searched and searched to find these in black barrels with a black trim. They do not have to be carbon fiber either, just want all black, shiny 4.5" tips. I see some conflicting measurements on the info I have and wanted to verify. Am I looking for 2.5 or 2.35" inlet? It seems like they are used interchangably and i'm guessing there is enough crush in the clamp portion that either will work. These are the closest i've been able to find and end up at a 4" barrel along with a one star rating on amazon.

The pipes themselves are 2 1/4" so you want something that's 2.35" inner diameter. It looks like what these are based on the description. I wanted to go the all black route but it was almost impossible to come by. The only place I found is in the link below but they were out of stock at the time and said it would be weeks before they got more. They're also about double the price but they have 100% reviews so the quality will be good.

These are from what looks to be the same seller as my tips for a little less than the ones on Amazon and they are USA stocked so you'll get them way faster if you decide to go the 4" route.

Hope this helps.

On a side note the tips changed the sound of the car which I thought was impossible. In looking at the old tips they had holes all around with what looked to be batting of sort behind. I'm starting to think those holes actually absorbed some of the sound. It could be a placebo but I do love the sound coming out of the exhaust now.

@IRpilot.....how you align the tips, so when installing back the bumper, they do not touch the bumper?

If you look at my pic with the saw blade, you'll see that the outer pipe flares out as it goes back. I just pushed the tip all the way back until it rested against the flare. That flare makes it perfectly aligned. Then I adjusted the inner tip to match the outer. Once all the tips were on I eyeballed both sides against each other to make sure everything was lined up before tightening them all the way. Good question, I should of mentioned that in my first post.

That definitly help me on identify what i'm looking for. I may end up going with the 4" but I really like how the 4.5" tips fill out the holes and almost touch. Glad to know you searched all over and it's not just me!!

Yeah the 4.5" tips pretty much cover up all the reflective heat shield that's behind them. I was initially going to paint that area but the 4.5" tips filled the space really well.

What's your reply when someone asks how you have seemingly the only steel "Akrapovic" exhaust in the world?

I'd reply thank you! I only paid $140 bucks for them and they're not one of those cool titanium cat back exhausts...they're just the tips. The only reason I started this thread is to help others trying to change their exhaust tips because I couldn't find good info on how to replace them. Hope you found the thread useful. Thanks for stopping by!

They're not Akrapovic. At all. They look nice, but it's the same as putting a Z06 badge on a Stingray.
