Just so I understand, you are driving on the streets with no dirt protection for the motor?
The filter has a backing so all of the air does go through the filter with the air box cover off as long as it doesn't vibrate off of the box, it's on there very tight so it may take a while for it to come off if at all.
Hey All, new member here, I just joined the Corvette family back in February of this year when I purchased a '23 Stingray 3LT. I traded in a Hellcat for the C8, and I must say the 'Vette is the best car I've ever driven and owned, hands down. I'm an avid NHRA bracket racer and I love racing the car on the weekends. It has taken me some time to figure things out but I'm having some success with it. I wanted to share with the community about a phone call I had the other day with an aftermarket guy who does all of the flow bench testing with the company he works for. I can't remember his name, but I wouldn't tell it anyway because he wouldn't deserve any negative feedback from anyone because of something I said. However, what he told me to try worked, and I do mean it worked and works well. I mentioned to him that I didn't want to pay hundreds of $$ for an air intake for an extra 10 HP, it just wasn't worth it to me. This dude chuckles and said he agreed with me, and he's in the business of selling air intakes and other fast goodies. So, he says "Take the cover off the air box, you can strap the air filter in place if you like, but it doesn't really need it, it ain't goin' nowhere." He says that when he flowed the C8 LT2 with the air box cover off, it flowed 6-7% more than when the cover was on it, and it won't throw a check engine light. The first thing I did when I got off the phone with this dude is take the cover off the air box, let the filter do it's thing, no strap needed, then hit the street with it. If you do the math, 500HP x .06 or .07 and you get 30-35HP doing a little labor of your own. You can feel the difference in the seat of your shorts (I live in FL, we wear shorts), the damn thing is a rocket ship. I put some Nitto 555R2s on it and now it doesn't spin after launch. Best time to date is a 7.24 in the 1/8th DA 2000', leaving off launch control at 3500rpm in the Pro class. I run in two weeks at Gainesville, the DA will most likely be worse because of the heat, but we'll see what it does with the air box cover off. There's one side note to this, I notice that when cruising down the interstate at 80mph you can hear a slight drone when the engine is running on 4cyl, but that sound goes away as soon as the other 4 lungs kick in to help out. Free HP is a good thing, so I wanted to share that info with y'all. If this has been posted already then please forgive me. Y'all take care...
@scottsman2025 Welcome aboard. I'll try your friends trick next time I'm on the dyno just to see if there's any noteworthy difference indicated.
