I'm puzzled by the inaccuracy of the fuel level indicator in my '24 C8. I'll get a low fuel light, hit the gas station where the car only takes 14 or 15 gallons in a supposedly 18.5 gallon tank. What am I missing here?
Well, 15 gallons, is 3.5 gallons away from totally empty. When do think it should alert you? 2 gallons? Less?
And, although the capacity of the tank is 18.5, I wonder (and I do not know) if that is all usable. There are two separate tanks back there. With 3.5 gallons left, how much is actually in each tank? Again I do not know - but probably split between each tank. There is a cross-over pipe between them near the bottom of the tanks.
I can tell you that most of it is usable. I failed to check on the fuel level one time at the track, and I was able to make it : )
Actually, it gets even worse at the track, since the tank is shaken quite a bit. I use the "Fuel used" gauge on the dash, which is based on injector duty cycle, and is much more accurate. This is usually what most motorcycle owners also do, since the tank will not give you an accurate reading.
I was wondering if it is consistent. The number, fuel used, is also the number the computer uses when it computes miles per gallon isn't it? Have folks found that the estimated fuel mileage on the DIC matches what they calculate based on fuel pumped and miles driven? I don't know - I don't bother to check it.
