DD - to rustproof or not?
My wife just got a new vehicle, Honda CRV and just wanted to get some input on what you guys think about aftermarket rustproofing ie: Krown?

Nothing but good things to say about it, my 1998 GMC Sierra still looks like new and I only take it to Krown every other or every few years. Personally wait one winter, Krown really bites in once you have a bit of surface corrosion or some stone chips on the underside.

Most vehicles manufactured to day will die of mechanical failure before body rust as in the past. That said getting it done new with Krown is a personal choice of mine as well. I would get it done new, now for the simple reasons to premptively coat numerous rustable parts under the car. Once the rust starts ot takes hold it is difficult impossible to slow down or stop. Best defence is a good offence. Or think of it this way....$35,000+ investment....$120 bucks for additional piece of mind. I'd do it.

just make sure when you get it done that you dont park it in your driveway for a few days it will drip for a week.

First thing I did after picking up my brand new F150 in 1997. Truck still looks like new, although having the heated indoor car wash available all winter long to wash it when the roads dry up helps

Jon, it will drip for a awhile. I leave mine outside for a couple hours before parking it in the garage, first good rain will clean up the driveway.

First thing I guess is how long will you keep it? 6 years or less, forget it. Next, I have never seen an independent study thats says any of that stuff is of value and further the manufacturers and consumer reports don't recommend it. How is it supposed to work if it all drips off onto your driveway anyhoo.

if its a lease forget it money spend for nothing... BUT if you buy it and really want to keep it on the long run do it as soon as possible as getting it done new with no dirt accumulation or rain driving before will get it treated as it should and make sure you go in the shop with the guy that will do it and get it done properly (give im a 10 or 20$ on the side!) and he will be glad to put as much stuff as he can and your honda will be good for 20 years and at least 500000kms on the same drivetrain... rust kill japanese cars but mechanic are good for +/a million kms... like we see some of our corvettes doing 500000 miles on the road in the U.S. without any issues on drivetrain...

I would add my voice to getting it Krowned.
I had the C6 done on the advice of two shops where we get our cars worked on. As one of them told me, Krown will protect not only the metal parts, but electrical components as well (motors, connectors, etc)
When the C6 was done they did it without drilling any holes and were very very careful where they sprayed..........although I think that had something to do with my mechanic standing over the Krown telling him EXACTLY where to spray

It gets very messy, especially if you do it every year, everything you touch has oil on it, you really need to clean door jams or gets on your clothes. I did to my van for 7 years, in pretty good shape but the roof holds water and it rotted in two spots right through. They don't spray everywhere. Check out that new electronic module that sends current through the car and is supposed to stop rust. It's clean and no worries of going in every year to not void warranty from Krown. All new cars are dipped in a rust corrosion bath at the factory, that's why they give you warranty, keep it clean during the winter, wash once a week and store in garage if possible and it will last. Just my opinion.... I do know a lot of people who swear by Krown, so its up to you.

I used to get it done with all of my cars back in the 80s and early 90s, but have since stopped, as I do think new cars nowadays don't rust as easily. Case in point, my wife's 2000 Civic has never been rustproofed and still has no rust on it. If we'd gone to Krown every year we would've spent over $1200 so far, and would be no further ahead than we are now. Even if rust begins to show up in the next few years, by then we'll be ready to replace the car anyhow (or we could've put the money we've saved towards getting bodywork and paint done!)

I agree with Patman. Today's factory corrosion protection methods are more advanced than back in the days. I used to spend money on this stuff too but stopped since 2004 and my current car still looks brand new. I have found that even with cars that are coated with rust protection, there are parts in the under carriage that cannot be coated and they show rust just as non coated cars. I don't intend to keep my cars longer then 6-7 yrs so it's more of a subjective issue and if it gives you peace of mind then do it.

Don't do it. I have a 7 year old Accord without a mark on it. All I do is pressure wash it every week or so during the winter at the coin-op car wash, unless it's really cold.
My '93 Accord started to show minor rust after 8 years and it was 'rustproofed'.
I'm not a fan of spending $100+ every year to make my new car a gooey mess so that maybe it'll look good 10 years from now.

I religiously have my DD's done every year! My wife's 97 Cavalier looks almost as good as it came off the line! I figure your pay 160.00 a year in oil changes for preventative maintenance, another $100.00 is not that much more. Plus keep in mind it does more the just keep the body better, it lubricates the complete undercarriage. Plus.. If you have it done every year from new they will warranty no rust!! so call it about $1000 total over ten years... your first rust repair will likely be at least that. My moms' 04 CRV was never done.. Was a leased car that she bought out... Bottom side of all four doors are rusting at the inside seams... theres a $500.00 fix.. My $.02

I get both my cars done; that said most cars have a 10 year + corrosion warranty, so if you don't plan on keeping it past that, you could definitely justify not doing it.
It is kind of messy for sure, it's not so bad in the jambs, but under the hood is quite gooey.
