Default Detailing Engine HELP!!!!

I want to detail my engine painting it while still in the car. The water pump was replaced several years back and was not painted and some of the paint on the engine needs to be repainted. Can you all give me any tips? And how about the best paint to use? Should I spray or use a brush. Let me hear what you have done.
Thanks

Use simple green and a pressure washer to clean everything. throw a plastic bag over the carb and distributor. If a bit of water gets in the carb no biggie. Rattle can engine paint is a good choice. After cleaning the engine, run it a bit to warm up and dry it off, then tape and cover parts and paint.

Aluminum foil is your friend for detailing. Get a roll. Wrap things like brake boosters like a ham. Quick/easy.

That's hard to say without seeing it. The more you can take off, the better/easier it is. I.E., Taking off the belts and pulleys, you can paint the pump complete, while glass bead blasting the pulleys and fan semi-gloss black. I use primer, but if the pump is rusty, it will last just so long.

Default Rust Converter

How about using a rust converter and then painting over that. Do the rust converters work?

Try the foil sometime Bob. It works great on goofy shapes.

I used that when I por 15'ed my frame. Worked great on rotors, calipers and weird shaped things.

I pulled the intake and exhaust manifolds and the fan and pulleys. Made life simple and only took a couple hours. Wire brush the water pump good.

Excellant advice. You would think a sparky would include that tidbit.

Bent a rod that way once.

Now I bump it over very gently with the coil disabled to make sure there is no wet lock in it.

If you have an 81, they are magnesium. Just take a sanding block and 220, and sand off the tips. Do it by hand. I masked mine off.
