Default wetsanding progress

Progress on the car.....finished wetsanding the car except for a few small areas, polished it out with a yellow edge wool and menz SIP, hit it with a green edge wool and menz final polish, then blue edge wool and menz nano. Maybe not the most efficient way to get it done, but it seems to be working.

not the best channel on tv to show the reflection, but I wanted a cartoon to catch the colors so that you can see the reflection in the hood.

Paint appears to be pretty flat now.

You will need to follow up with a foam pad or you will have slight holograms in the sun.

Next week I am going to purchase a Mirka MR-625 air sander and start using the Abralon 2k/4k discs to wetsand. The MR-625 just arrived into the states this week.

Dynabrade and Airvantage also make a nice sander. You just want to make sure you get a sander with a 3/32" throw. A PC in comparison has a 3/8" throw. Many air sanders have a 3/16" throw which is still to much for finishing work. Too much throw means you will increase the chance of leaving pigtails in the finish which is a PITA to buff out.

Look at this thread from the UK. Videos and many pics.

if its nice and sunny one day next week, im going to pull it out in the sun and wash it to get all the residue off and then go over it a couple of times with the foam. I was think the CCS white pad with nano, and then a blue finishing CCS with finishing glaze, then pc it with a coat of wolfgang sealant and cover it with a coat of souveran.

The "crapbox" ford was a doner car for the demo of the system. Maybe they should of tried it out on a black Bentley.

Just trying to share what I consider an advanced way of wetsanding.

sheesh, dont be so touchy, I like the process, just seemed like allot of work for that particular car. But I "do" understand the concept of a demo car.

I didnt have time to read the particulars, so whatever the situation was, im sure it made sense. that looks like a really cool little tool, if I had an air compressor, I might consider one myself.

Don't mess with my touchy side.

Whenever you have some time, have a look at the videos.

Nice write up on a good wetsanding system. It is what I plan on getting into to remove orange peel one day.

Do you know how much a system like that costs?

Josh.

First you will need an air sander, but you must make sure it has a throw of 3/32". Anything w/ a larger throw and you increase the chance of inducing pigtails into the paint. A PC has a throw of 3/8". From what I can see the choices are:

Mirka MR-625-Just released in the US, retail is $237, discounted price about $165.

Airvantage AVS61100S about $135 plus shipping.

There are a few others.

Backing plate velcro $15-20

Interface pad $10

Box of 20 abralon sanding discs, they come in 2000 and 4000 grit are $70 a box.

At a minimum you are looking at $300.

Some mail order places will sell the abralon discs for about $5 each plus shipping.

Doesn't 3M have one also?

$300-$400 bucks not bad, for removing OP it should pay for itself in 2 panels worth of work....

Thanks for the info, I'll probably get into all that sometime next year.

Josh, 3m has the trizact system with a 1500 and 3000 cut disc.

Dynabrade also makes great air sanders as well.

Reading the thread from the UK, those guys only removed 4 microns of clear doing three passes with the 2000 and one with the 4000.

I read that, very nice info to know.

I wonder how thick most factory clear coats are though?

Now I just need to get my hands on that system and learn on a junker like they did, then take it to my premier cleints and make a little change.

I need to learn OP removal anyways....

Evil, Sorry that we are jacking your thread. Post up more pics after you get it finished off. Really would like to see some pics after your polishing before you apply the LSP.

I think I have that info somewhere at home. I believe the average paint and CC thickness is 160 microns or so. Depends on who makes the car.
