Default VERY ODD...Rear End Problem...

My rear end was making funny sounds on the way home from the track last Sat. I finally decided to take it apart & check it...

UNREAL.... all the bolts holding the Ring Gear had come lose ??? WTF!!

I knew the posi was shot, & had planned to send it back to Not Just Vettes, for a rebuild. I sent the entire pumpkin just as it came out & called them & told Ed about it...

I'm worried that the ring gear may be worn & the backlash can't be properly set..

I think I'll get a set of feeler gauges & check, but I've never done a rear, & never set backlash... Any suggestions..& or advice?

Sorry John, I'm no help.

good luck

I finally ripped mine out yesterday. (Only took 1 1/2 hours) My gears are still good but the Posi has some broken pieces in it. The springs that are in the end of the diff case fell out in pieces, one stuck out and gouged the alum case and bearing cap a little. That's were my clicking noise was coming from. I'm debatind on ordering a new case or not. The posi should be here today or tomarrow. Now I need to look for a bearing kit since they all look shot to. I guess if you want to play you got to pay :(

I just did my Dana44 with the help of an expierenced mechanic/neighbor. When he checked the backlash, he rigged a dial indicator up to the housing with the tip of the indicator resting on one gear of the ring gear. As you rock the gear back and forth, the backlash can be easily read.

Believe it or not I used to be a machinist BEFORE my cop days.. I DO know what a dial indicator, vernier, depth gauge, micrometer, are, & I've even used them... but that was when you were still in diapers :D

& I'm gladE I can spell them too :)
