Well, I felt like removing my screens from my MAF. Then I felt like removing the fins. Then I thought 'what the hell, why not gut it all', so I did that. Got the 870 repinned for the 730 today and now I just gotta wait for my TDF file and my V8 memcal. Other than that, every thing went smoothly so far, but I guess I will find out soon enough.
The main reason I did it? I got ticked off that Diacom didn't show spark readings. Plus, my burnoff was shot and my sensor went down with it.
Good deal Matt,
The scan data from the 7730 will really help diagnose problems.
As for tuning you should be able to start with a stock bin and go from there .
Dennis
PS. dont forget to disable vats
In a 7730 computer, VATS is disabled by the chip programmer, one of the first things I had requested for my '87 chip....
of course in my 7730 install in my '72, I don't have VATS....I did my own anti-theft device....
MrVette-I think what Dennis was pointing out was when I burned my chips, I needed to make sure the VATS flag was unchecked. He didn't want me to spend 2 hours working on chip parameters and have a no-fire situation when it was in my car
Hopefully I got enough experience burning chips for the 85 ECM to make things go a little faster now. Thanks for noticing that though. -Matt-
Why install the ZIF? If you're changing programs often, either let the computer hang and erase and write with the EPROM in the memcal, or run a remote EPROM in a ZIF. Problems with option 1 are that you'll eventually burn out the EPROM and have to solder a new one in and the computer looks fugly hanging there. Problem with option 2 is that there's no standardized practice for effectively shielding the cable to the memcal. Some have said to just use ribbon cable and wrap AL foil around it. An electrician told me I'd have to use special wire that has a ground shield. I hate experimenting with my stuff when I don't have an EE degree, so I'm just letting my computer hang for now. The stock EPROM should last a long time as long as I don't over erase it.
Right now it is grim. I fired it up last night but could only get it to run w/ the EST wire disconnected. It was running WAAAAAY too rich. I could get it to shoot trouble codes BUT could not get it to link to DIACOM, perhaps because I am using the correct bin but a V6 memcal (I cut the memcal in half and did a ribbon cable for now). I am really in a bind. I don't have time to wait for the correct memcal as I have to leave for summer classes 220 miles away on Saturday, so I am in a bit of a predicament.
So like I said, the FP kicked on and I was able to jumper ALDL and get codes but I couldn't link-HOPEFULLY because of the wrong memcal.
It just got better. I swapped ALCL pin E in my 85 to pin M. For the 91, it runs a jumper wire to both of these. The 85 doesn't use a jumper wire so I needed to swap it. Gotta thank Bowtye8 for that one.
Then for the VIN, I used 'FF' for an F body instead of 'YY' and I used a year code of 'M' for a 91.
After all this, Diacom linked. [img]http]//www.corvetteforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif[/img] THanks guys, -Matt-
The guy called me yesterday and told me that he is having problems with the less-than-industrial strength leaves in the memcal. He said the weaken and curl when desoldered. He's trying to get parts.
Aaron,
I'm not using a regular EPROM, I'm using a 29C256 flash Eprom. I plan to be doing a lot of reprogramming until I get it right!

Mojo-I hope you trust this guy. Reason I say that is I hope he isn't pulling your leg. I ground down my solder tip to a nice point and used a very thin piece of solder wick...no problems although it did take quite a while.
Well, I keep getting cyl select error because I haven't gotten my 8 cyl memcal and the 6 cyl memcal has the resistor networks on it. Hope that is my code 41 problemo.
Looks like I won't be driving it for another month at least. I couldn't locate a V8 memcal within a 2 hour radius w/o ordering it and have to pack my bags on Saturday. Know it will be worth all the effort though. Regards, -Matt-
It looks like I have to buy another memcal. I specifically told the guy that he could destroy the chip, just be careful with the memcal. He brought it back Saturday with the chip intact, and the pins destroyed in the memcal. Because the tranny in my daily driver just started to take a dump, I don't have time to wait around for a good priced memcal. I'll have to spend $80 from GM for one. *sigh*
I know I can get one for under $50 if I go mail order. You can forget the junkyards around here, I spent a full weekend scouring them all, and I couldn't even come up with a '7730 ecm. Unfortunately, I need one today, and the only way that's going to happen is from the dealer.
When I ran a V6 memcal for a few days, I always had a cyl. select error. Don't know if that error causes poor running, but I know I couldn't mask the error w/ the software I was using. Then again, I got it to run with the 6'er for a few days.
Had to head up to summer school without my car so I am a bit depressed right now. -Matt-
I bought my new memcal yesterday at the local Pontiac dealer for $77. I'm going at lunch today to get the ZIF socket installed on it. With any luck, I'll be driving the car this week. All I have left to do is to change the knock sensor and run a new ALDL wire to pin M.
GOOD GOD!!! WILL IT NEVER END?!?!? I finished my conversion last night. I went to start it and it just cranked. The battery was kind of low and the ECM wasn't giving any error codes so I thought I should give it a charge and try again later. I put it on the float charger and came back out a few hours later to try it out when.... my starter took a dump! My car just doesn't want to run. Ever.
