Have an opportunity to pick up a 73 Vette which the owner claims to have a LS - 7 motor in it. I would appreciate any info eg. serial/casting numbers, specs., fuel requirements etc. regarding this motor which " never made it to production" to check for it's authenticity. Your help is appreciated.....
Since it was never really a production engine, I wouldn't expect a prefix number stamped into it (could be wrong on that). The person selling could of bought all the parts and assembed as I did.
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (dalt97)
An LS7 Corvette was never produced. Actually not even a complete engine.
An LS7 was an L88 except it had 454 cubes vs. 427. It was supposed to debut in 70' but the project was scraped. Only the LS5 was obtainable from the factory in 73'.
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (dalt97)
You guys are ALL mistaken all except 71coupe. 3965774 that is/was the part number for the engine. I put one in a`67 roadster and had the "time of my life" until this car of course. ...redvetracr
PS i still have the parts list from GM (a parts dept bulletin actually)
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (redvetracr)
redvetracr - Do you have any additional casting numbers that could help him to I.D. the motor ? Could he find that part # that you have listed on the motor? . It may be one of the real over the counter LS-7's.
I remember reading that Chev always used the same letter combinations when stamping replacement motors.
Maybe Joe Lucia may have some info on these motors as well.
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (71coupe)
Was this a tripower setup or a single carb. The original LS7 was a tripower, I know the L88 was not, however the plans on the original LS7 called for it to be a 3x2. I know it was sold over the counter, but I under the impression that it was only sold as a long block and not complete.
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (snaketr)
I purchased an LS-7 from my local Chevy dealer back in '90. The block came as a longblock. At the time they also offered the LS-6 which came complete with manifold and waterpump. The only difference at the time between the LS-7 and LS-6 long blocks was the camshaft and pistons. The LS-7 was 12.3-1 and the LS-6 was 10-1. The LS-7 also had a longer duration cam. The LS-7 came with the corvette-trap door oil pan, but I don't know if the LS-6 did.
The block and heads were the standard high performance heads and 4-bolt block, nothing super special. Here the numbers I pulled off my block: 14015445 and heads 6272990. From the dealer, the front pad has no stamped numbers and everything is painted black.
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (dalt97)
An LS7 crate engine should have an engine code of "XCH" stamped in the traditional location - top-front of RH cyl deck. If you find something other than that let us know. -Jeff

Car has been for sale since February but it's price has dropped from $20 to $10,000 U.S. I never looked at it in the spring ( about a hundred miles from me ) due to the price but posted to the forum for fuel requirements etc. Joe L. did respond ( can't even remember exactly what he said ) but will solict him again for number verification.Owner wants to trade for my 77. Thanks to all......
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (six-T-six)
Well that peaked my interest so I went back to double check. The block pad is blank. What do you think Jeff...
Hmmm, interesting. When I get to work tomorrow I'll try to remember to call GM and make sure that "all" of them had a stamping. I assume that the block has never been decked, right? -Jeff
Re: Looking for Info on the LS - 7 Engine....... (18carfan)
Yep, it's never been decked. The only work I had to do over the years was change the head gasket on that side. I purchased it from Rockmont Chevrolet in Rockville, MD but I don't think they are around anymore. Thanks for checking....
