Default Where are the cubes?

When I do the math for a 3.75 stroke and 4.030 bore, I end up with 379.62ci.
How is this a 383? Am I missing something? :confused:

Actually should come out to 382.6680858

3.75 * 4.03 * 8 * .7854

I came up with 382.66719 which is close enough but am kinda curious about the .7854 thing.

I was told there would be no math after I got out of school. :sleep:

There has to be a bore x bore in the equation,

DISP = # cyl x Bore x Bore x Stroke x PI/4

8 x 4.03 x 4.03 * 3.75 * 3.14159 / 4 ~ 382.667

I think the actual formula, though all of these mentioned above are a derivation of this one is:

volume of a cylinder = pi x r^2 * H
whereas: pi = 22/7 or 3.1429
r^2 = the square (any number times itself) of the radius of the cylinder; r = d/2
d = diameter of the cylinder
H = height of the cylinder; i.e. the stroke of the crank

so to calculate displacement the formula is:
engine displacement = # of cylinders x volume of the cylinder

or:
Disp = # of cylinders x pi x r^2 x H

in the case of the historical 383 engine the formula tells us:
Disp = 8 x 3.1429 x (4.030/2)^2 x 3.75
= 8 x 3.1429 x (2.0150)^2 x 3.75
= 8 x 3.1429 x 4.0602 x 3.75
= 8 x 47.8334
Disp = 382.6672 cu in

Hope this helps.

Just for fun try a 0.030" overbore on an aftermarket 400 block with a 4-1/8" stroke crank. I'm gathering parts for this currently.
