I just ordered a shiny new Merlin II block, so now I need to start budgeting for the rest of the engine. Once cost I'm not sure about is rotating assembly balancing. How much does it normally run, ballpark? Should I be looking for a shop that can "high speed" balance? I've seen that in the World Castings ads for their rotating assemblies. Thanks!
redvetracr, that's the question. See, I may be able to get some of the required parts used (specifically, a set of L88 rods and a GM steel crank), but then I'd have to have the assembly balanced locally.
I was thinking of piecing a rotating assembly together with Scat cast crank, Eagle H-beam rods, and SRP pistons. Do I have to shop for specific weights to make sure everything balances ok? I don't really understand. One place (flatlander racing) told me that I need to buy one of their rotating assemblies, rather than piece their parts together. They told me that I might have to spend up to $500 to balance a "pieced" together assembly. Where their assembly will only cost about $100.
Thanks,
Jay

Yes, it is possible to spend lots of money balancing mis-matched stuff, particularly if you want it internally balanced. If they have to start adding malory metal it gets expensive.
