A lot of discussion on bolt sealant has been discussed recently. What is the best method on installing main studs and bolts into blind tapped holes on a Dart block. I've heard that main studs need to be only finger tight, but do they need any assy grease or locktite of any type???
Since the main and head bolt/stud holes are blind tapped on the Dart block, I just used some ARP assembly lube on the studs. They don't protrude into the water jackets, so you don't need any sealer. Also, as you mentioned, they are only installed in the block finger tight. You can Loctite them into the block if you prefer, but you'll need to install the main caps/heads at the same time and torque them down before the Loctite sets. After the Loctite sets, you can remove the caps/heads if you need to.
if there is any possiblity that it goes into a water jacket, then use formagasket no.2
Stud ends that go into the block can use it too. then use the moly lube on the nut end (that should be the only part that moves during torqueing).
I don't recommend the ARP "thread sealer" however their moly lube is fine.

What engine bolts are only finger tight
How can this be and what would happen if you torqued them. I must have missed something in engihe 101! Please explain this to me :D
Only studs - head studs and main studs are only installed finger tight into the block. After the head or main caps are installed over the studs, then you torque the nuts, after applying the proper assembly lube and in at least 3 steps. ARP also recommends torqueing and untorqueing the fastener 3 times before the fastener is torqued for final assembly. THis ensures the most accurate torque reading - but unfortunately, most machine shops usually don't do it.
