I am currently in the "planning" stages of my new engine project. I am building a 406,9.5-1,dual plane intake, haven't decided on heads yet may be ported stockers with larger valves, auto trans(700R4) with possibly 3:55 rear. Anyway, I am trying to decide on a cam. I am planning on running a hydraulic flat tappet. I am considering the comp cams XE 274 or maybe the XE268. Does anyone have any experience with either of these cams? I would love to hear how you feel about either of these in a 406. If you have any suggestions for other cams that would be great too as I am not definite on anything yet. You always read not to "over cam" an engine, I just want to be sure that I am on the right path.
Since you haven't decided on heads yet I would try and not finalize on compression - 9.5:1 will be fine for iron heads but is probably pretty low for a set of aluminum heads.
Have you considered a roller lifter convertion (hydraulic or solid) or are you pretty much set on the flat tappet lifters.
What kind of RPM are you looking for (shift points, etc.) as well as any emissions, idle/drivability requirements and such. The exact cam spec is also going to depend on the heads/head porting.
With the 700-r4 and 3.55 gears, I think that XE268 would be the upper limit for your car. If you go with a 2500 or 3000 rpm converter, you can probably go with the XE274. The 274 is a pretty lopey cam so your vacuum is probably going to be marginal at idle and you might have problems with Power Brakes and headlight activation.
