I took my '68 Firebird out for a spin today. Cranked up fine. Idled fine in the warm up, tapped the accelerator to lower the rpm's, backed out and off I went. When I got down the road, just a few miles, it wanted to die on me at the stop lights. As long as I shifted into neutral and kept my foot on the gas some, it would keep running. If I took my foot off the gas it would die. Where would you start looking for a problem? Fuel pump? Carb issue? Thanks in advance for your help!
Sounds like it's lean at idle or timing is way off. Start with timing and then check carb. Not knowing the combo it could be:
Timing too low
Vacuum leak
Idle mixture set wrong
Cam requires more airflow and it's idling too low
Idle feed restrictions/air bleeds need to be tweaked (not as likely)
Give us more details. Carb, cam, cubes, converter, idle stop solenoid, A/C?
