Default Oil Pump

I am in the process of building a 383 with Lunati bottom end parts. I am wondering if I should use a HV oil pump or would a stock pump be sufficient.

The concensus here is that you do not need a HV pump. I've got one and left it HV, but you do get an extra spring with them which makes it a hi pressure only, not hi pressure and hi volume. Lotsa extra wear on the dist. bushings with hi vol. You also need a bigger oil pan if you plan to rev it alot with the HV. When I do my engine swap, I'll change the spring to hi press. only.

the spring has nothing to do with pump volume, only the pressure. the volume is determined by the length of the gears and you can not change that without going to a different pump. :chevy

Zeus, I dug long hard and deep on this one. The smart money says get the new style Melling adjustable (pressure) pump. It's got a 3/4" bolt on pickup tube. It's a 10% over volume pump, has steel gears (unlike most of the others that have powdered metal gears.) The other benefits include a stronger, stiffer, more accurate shaft to the dist.
