My two next purchases are going to be 28x11.5x15 Mickey Thompson ET Streets and a 3.70 Corvette Rear End. My buddy can get me the ET Streets brand new for $100 a pop. Where would the best place be to purchase a 3.70 rear end from? Would Eckler's be a good choice or should I purchase one off of Tom's Differentials?
While I have the rear end out I will also be getting all new Spicer non-greasable U-joints. Will the 3.70 rear end be able to take the power if the ET Streets hook up? I won't be launching too hard (probably around 2000-3000RPMs) and won't be side-stepping the clutch.
There's a Viper in my town who was picking on me the other day (all in good fun :D) and he wants to run me down the 1320....I told him I'll be down once I get a set of tires that will hook up.
Actually I have found some good deals on parts such as my side pipes and blow-proof bellhousing which were both purchased for half of what they would have cost brand new. As for rear ends on eBay, no thanks....I learned my lesson after the first one :D (I still have the remains up in the garage).
IMO closing up the gears on a warmed up 468 ci will probably slow it down. The more shifting your do in a 1320 the closer you have to have your car dialed in to keep it from hazing the tires on launch and every time wasting shift.
For serious drag racing you really need to sit down with a speed/gear calculating program. With a four speed BBC you just can't off the wall figure that a 3.73 is faster than some lesser gearing. Because shifting into fourth at the end of quarter is slower than a car that is still in third just going over peak power at the lights.
You should do some testing at the quarter mile first. Go out and run it to red line before every shift and then try some runs short shifting and just using all that big block TQ. You might be surprized how close the ET's are!:)
I ran 4.30 gearing with a 2 speed power glide in a fast car

Sounds like a plan to me :). I took the 'Vette out yesterday and it did 55mph in first gear, I checked the RPM calculator on http://www.smokemup.com and it was very accurate. At some point I'll probably have to shift to fourth gear towards the end of the 1/4 mile I think. I'll probably take it to the track and use my 215/70/15s that I'm currently using :(. I do have to change some things before my car will pass tech though. I also want to get an MSD 6AL Ignition Box w/ Rev Limiter before I go down. Thanks for the advice gkull.
Just fyi for ya Bence.... WIth my small block(ie low power) I am running 6500+ rpm in third at the lights or I have to shift into 4th.
With your big block you'll definately have to shift into 4th in the 1/4 but with 3.36's you should be able to pull the quarter in 3rd....... You'll learn shifting looses a lot of time in the quarter, no matter how quickly you can shift
Bence - I really think Crane Cams makes a superior Multi spark rev limiter. When mine comes on it makes different sound because of the sequential misfiring. What ever brand you go with get digital. MSD 6's blow motors because of a **** poor radom misfire

Re: Rear End Questions? (bence13_33)
Bence: After seeing more than one guy who has broken U-Joints I am going to pick up some half shaft loops from dragvette.com $100.00 and they bolt right on.
I am going through the same issues you are. I am runing 3.70's in mine with a Richmond 6 speed. For street driving I like the tranny a lot, it is always in the power band. For the HP I am making it seems to be about perfect, when I start messing with my NOS system the gears will be to deep to use until 3rd gear, I think.
I built mine to be a street car, so the couple of tenths I may lose on the track I make up for in fun on the street. :chevy
Bence the MSD 6AL is very cool, just make sure to test it out with the 3000rpm module they give you.
I'm able to shift now by not letting up WOT through the gears. The rev limiter stops right where I need it to, and once I slam it into gear I can get more power to the rear. It's cool to break traction all the way through 4th with having the peace of mind of no over-revving!!
