i started renting my dyno out a month or so ago...what an experience! everything from a turbocharged neon to a hemi challenger....i need some advice. things are real slow right now and ive been told that i should make the dyno portable..not an easy task, this thing weighs 5000lbs! i have never been at a show or gathering where a chassis dyno was available..can anyone give me an idea what they would expect to pay for a run and if they would run their car on a portable unit. im havin a hard time cuttin loose of the money that the trailer costs...thanks in advance :)
how much time between runs? do i allow them time to tune? advice is free on the dyno when there is no one in line to use it. has the dyno been busy? keep the info comin! :)

Re: dyno experiences... (CORKVETTE1)
Any chance of posting some dyno stories, mods that worked, didn't work, what decent to good street motors pull, etc. I am sure you have a wealth of knowledge. :chevy
definitely not a wealth of knowledge....no wealth here!! ok..funny story...thanks to that funny movie(f&f) ive seen some strange things..the turbo neon takes the cake...owner brings the car over,we hook the car up and run the first test, tells me how the car noses over from lack of fuel(thats strange..the shop was full of black smoke) we take some fuel away and the car picks up about 23 hp at the wheels(cool..we're goin the right way) take away some more fuel and about halfway thru the test the clutch dies in the car...these guys think its so cool that the motor can do that! how much power does a stock neon put out? they keep throwin stock clutches at this thing! i will say this..the hemi challenger was the coolest.. carbs were havin all kinds of problems(pig-rich)and it still made 365 rwhp....it will be back on thursday or friday! my record is an olds...467rwhp 618lb-ft of torque too much fun! :) ill tell more war stories tomorrow..
I bet you could get several forum members on that thing at the cruise in. Breathless has one there every year and I think they charge
$75 for 3 pulls. I pay about that for 3 pulls at a shop in knoxville that has one.
i was asked about good runnin street cars...if youre in the 300-350rwhp bracket on pump gas..you have a very fun car! high 11's low 12's is alot of fun! the biggest mistake i run in to is that people want to buy parts to "fix" their problems...tune the engine to what it wants, not what others tell you it needs :)

Re: dyno experiences... (1985z51)
467 rwhp and 618 torque sounds like NOS to me. I am going to guess a 150 shot? Dyno stories are a lot of fun. Typical ricer to be proud of the fact he can turbo a motor enough to kill a clutch designed to handle a little more power than my electric nose hair trimmer. :chevy
the olds is all throttle..no bottle! just a well thought out combination! something i dont see too often! one of the best carbureted cars ive seen was a gto...this thing ran like it was injected, nice smooth torque curve and very driveable. we made 5 runs experimenting with various things and only found 16 rwhp...those are the customers i like to work with, they keep you on your toes! on the opposite end of the scale are those who come unprepared and cant understand why i have to charge them by the hour...they run out of gas, puke oil all over the place, overheat and spend the dyno time fixin things that should have been done before they came. these are the same people that are thrashing things together at the track(while im cookin racer steaks and havin an iced tea)i use the dyno to make sure everything is prepared...it costs alot of money to haul everything to the track, make a pass and have something fail. preparation=performance :)
You hit the nail on the head as far as preparation=peformance. There are so many things that can be checked on a chassis dyno for real-world gains instead of taking your car to the track or even out on the street.
The guys at DynoJet told me that people that make their dynos portable can do a real good business at any kind of car related get togethers - not just the track.
I personally love reading the Car Craft articles that have dealt with their portable dyno at events. It is funny to see what kind of power people think they have and what they actually have. Very few seem to underrate it.
If I were you, I would go to a few events in your area and see what kind of response you get from people. If I didn't already have a dyno and were at an event that had one available AND the price was reasonable, I would put my car on it.
i've spent all day at the welding shop fabricating parts for the trailer...i figure it cant hurt to make the thing portable and it should get my name spread out a little further.....how do you handle the liability issue? i have a release that says basically the max rpm or wheelspeed that we're going to run and if something happens to their car within that range its their problem. ive had 2 people smoke clutches(ricers) and i couldnt believe how happy they were to pay me! my favorite thing to do so far...have the customer guess their rwhp and if they are within 10% they run for free...if they dont they pay double!! no one takes me up on that though. :D

Re: dyno experiences... (1985z51)
I've never put my car on a dyno but for the prices you guys are talking about it would be interesting to do. Have you ever used your data aginst one of the RWHP formulas? That is about as close as I have come to guessing my RWHP. You know the one where you put your ET, weight. Just wondering how close that equation might be? Thanks
i dont try to make numbers line up with someones expectations...they either do or they dont. had a mazda rx-7 turbo on today...if i knew how many cubic inches it was it might be a record run!! days like this are fun....this guy was a thinker,he never found 10hp in one place he found 2hp here and 2hp there.... :)
today was another good day on the dyno...i had a customer return after he did the changes i suggested,he was not happy when he left here the last time. he left here tonite with a big grin tonite! :D 38rwhp were found hiding in his combo,he couldn't write the check fast enough! i need money to pay my bills, but guys like that are the reason i keep doin this.. :)
ive been asked to bring my dyno to an event, the insurance costs are more than i expected does anyone have any suggestions about one time event insurance?..i need a binder to show the customer. thanks :)

Re: dyno experiences... (1985z51)
Just curious if you ever had your Vette on the rollers? I love to know the numbers.
I'm bringing my Vette for the first time tomorrow to a Dyno and I'm curious to see what it has. It's more like a base line test before I tear down the engine this winter.
My Vette is an 80K mile '86 Coupe Aluminum head, Auto
Mods: Flowmasters, Craig Marcho chip, Underdrive pullys, Air pump eliminator kit and has a K&N filter/Open lid.
my vette is my test mule...207rwhp 111k miles stock except for cut back plugs. the hemi challenger returned today...after he had the carb problems fixed he left with 65 more rwhp....smokin stinks  good luck tomorrow....remember we dont race dynos (you should be able to smoke my vette) :)

Well the results are in and there not pretty................
My Vette is running super lean around 14.3 Air/Fuel.
My injectors seem to be clogged up pretty good and also my car is pinging like crazy. Looks like my timing is way off, I have to get a light on it.
Yiikes! I'm glad I went and found out about all this!
wow..i was sure yours would beat mine by a bunch! hopefully you can find the problems easy to fix. the pinging would make me nervous, how do you know the injectors are the problem? yesterday i had a 71 Z28 on the dyno...218rwhp at 3400rpm...ignition and fuel problems wouldnt let me finish the test..this car will be in the 350-70rwhp bracket. the one problem i keep runnin into with carbureted cars is how they run their fuel system...they run fuel from the tank to the pump to a regulator and then to the carb. effectively the pump is hydraulicly locked.and gets overheated because its trying to turn. the way i run a fuel system is feed the carb and bypass the extra fuel back to the tank, your pump will be much happier :) i know its more expensive but pumps arent cheap either! good luck with your car...detonation kills
Steve, we hooked Magoo's car up to diacom since I had it with me. As soon as the throttle is hit the car starts pulling out 15* of timing throughout the run and the knock counts go crazy. He definitely has more potential. :yesnod: :yesnod:
Also when hot his car takes a few seconds to start, common sign of leaky/faulty injectors.
