Does it replace the stock computer or does it run in tandem?

It can replace your ecm or can be installed piggyback.
It is far superior to buying custom chip instead of someone quessing at what kind of chip you need you can tune it dead nuts on. Also the gm ecm has a limit as how much power you can make with it that is why you will see everyone that is making serious power with a dfi unit. http://www.mrgasket.com
Were you able to plug the ECM into the existing wiring harness or was it neccessary to re-wire the entire engine with the DFI leads? If it was possible to plug a DFI ECM into my existing harness, it would save quite a bit of money.
If you replaced the stock ECM with it, would you retain MAF or go Speed Density or is it compatable with both?, would using it instead of the stock ECM mess up other things? How is it that you are able to tune things yourself better (does it tune with a laptop & program)?
If you chose to keep the stock ecm in tandem, where would you mount this thing?
I am hoping that I can replace my ECM with a DFI ecm and mount in the same general location as stock. The speed density question raises a point. Since my original harness was not wired for a MAP sensor, I would have to buy a new harness unless the DFI supported a MAF system (not likely). This is something I do not know, but I'm sure someone on this forum does. Anyone?
The dfi comes with a wireing harness. You do away with the maf the dfi is speed density.
You tune it with a laptop.
Go to http://www.mrgasket.com click on accel dfi it will explain all about it.
The Accel DFI system can control everything the stock ECM does, operate all the stock gauges, etc.? All Id need to do is switch over to Speed Density.
This pdf i downloaded says that the DFI stores engine data for retrieval by a computer, exactly what data does it store, power graphs, timing changes, etc.?
It suggests that i wouldnt need to reprogram it after i did something like port the SR or change the cam, is that right? It senses things itself?
For those who have it, what did you do, install it piggyback or in place of the ECM (if you had FI to begin with), how much of a pain is it to install and where did you put it?
This seems like the computer i need for my interior redesign plan.
I am doing this very soon on my 93 LT4. The DFi is a piggyback in my car, mounted behind the passenger seat. It boldly states it should NOT be mounted in the engine compartment on their website. Anyhow, all it does it take the Engine controls away from the ecm. The ecm still does all of the previous functions
