Besides the different bolt patterns between these two distinctions, the square bore carb has secondary throttle bores somewhat similar to the primary bores. The spread bore carb has grossly larger secondaries than the small primaries of this type of carb, hence the name. Besides the bolt pattern, a spread bore carb's huge secondaries won't fit a 4 hole square bore manifold, due to the lack of clearence for the large throttle plates in the rear.
