Engine Experts - Help Needed Please
A friend of mine has the following car. It's an 87 chassis with a 96 vert body. Fully tubbed, custom dash in interior with full cage.
Here's the engine:
Yes, it has NOS, a 500 shot.
When he originally bought the car, he was under the impression it was a 454 block. He's having some problems, and thinks that the engine is not what he thought.
Question is, how can he determine, without completely dismantling the bottom end, what size block it is. Are there numbers on it that would tell us? Second, can you measure bore and stroke by just removing the heads and measuring the cylinder and piston travel, to determine cubic inches?
Lastly, is there anyone in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that really knows engines that can help us out?

He saw this car built several years ago while living in Oregon. He tracked the car to it's second owner when he heard it was for sale. He knows what was in it originally, and the second owner "says" they didn't change anything.
He's now having some issues in the heads/manifold area, and wants to replace all that, but needs to be sure of the bottom end, before he can make a final determination and truly maximize the engine.

He, most of all, should know that the bore and stroke DEFINE the cubic inch size of an engine.
That, aside, what kind of "issues" is he having?
